The first thing to note is that hard drive data recovery prices are variable. It is typically not one price to do every HDD recovery because as is often the case, the first answer is really ‘it depends…’!

As you can see in the table above, your hard drive recovery cost be anywhere from $49 to $2500. However these price ranges reflect the type of recovery necessary.

A simple software fix could be quick and easy, and therefore very cheap. Often they only recover personal documents and files, not an entire operating system. What if the work required was something like the following?

• Pull damaged plates of the hard drive apart.
• Treating the hard drive plates (for example polishing out mechanical impact in such a way as to minimize further damage to magnetic field used for storing the data). This will allow the next point.
• Reading recoverable parts of your data and compiling it together.
• Correcting possibly damaged data and substituting missing data (this requires very clever software, often developed in-house).

If so, then it will take a lot more time (with a lot of investment in research and development of software to do so). So the price will be relatively high accordingly. I’m certain technically challenging hard drive recovery cost like that could far more than $2500.

You will really need to have high value data in order to make this sort of price worth while. Cases like that do exist, but let’s hope that your needs are less extensive.

Save Money Tip #3 – Check for Free shipping

NOTE: Some recovery services offer free shipping to their location from yours. In the long run, this can add to the overall cost of their service relative to a local business.

Then again, they may have higher throughput due to a larger client base over a larger area, and higher volume of work can bring the per unit cost down.

The point is if two service providers look the same and one has free shipping, why not use that service?

Given the cost of a technician’s time, we guess the $49 price is for very little work to recover the hard drive.

Record Nation

Record Nation also offers a cheap service, and also has many do-it-yourself pieces of advice for hard-drive data recovery on their websites. Some of that advice includes shutting down your device to prevent additional loss, removing hard-drive from the device and connecting it to another one, or simply cleaning and reorganizing your data.

Data Recovery Now

Data Recovery Now has a comprehensive pricing list on their website, elaborating on all the charges according to the type of damage. It is easy to see that you can’t know the full repair scope in advance, and so you won’t be able to be sure of the exact data recovery cost in advance either.

With this knowledge you can certainly gauge the order of magnitude of your hard drive recovery cost. If they are near you they may be an option.

24 Hour Data

However, if you are looking for a quick recovery service that is also at a reasonable price, you could try 24 Hour Data. As the name suggests, it is available 24 hours a day, and so you can take your hard-drive to them at any time. Plus, the price is pretty much reasonable as well keeping in mind the delivery timings they claim to offer. I point out that you are paying more for fast response and turn around time.

What to look out for when assessing hard-drive data recovery services:

1. Some services charge on an hourly basis (tricky for you as you don’t know how long they will take and perhaps they only have a limited range of skill).
2. Some companies charge by the amount of the data that needs to be recovered (this is only reasonable to a certain extent, as incremental costs do not vary significantly).
3. The technician may have to look at the device to evaluate the extent of the harm to the device –and only then will they be able to tell you the actual costs. Beware of people who may tell a low price and raise it after you have sent them the drive.
4. Some companies assess the damage on their own time and at their own cost so they can be totally transparent with you as to what needs to be done to your hard drive to recover the data. (This is ideal and low risk to you the consumer of their services.)

Take Caution!

Dare I say it, the technology in these hard drives IS highly technical, and things can get complicated quickly and if you do the wrong thing, it can get messy. The recovery process may be demanding, and if you try a few things yourself and you are inexperienced, you might just create another more expensive mess such that you are better off not going through with DIY data recovery.

Depending on what your data is worth, and how you feel about how high a hard drive recovery cost could go up to, you may find it costly as well.

If you do need to use a professional hard drive recovery service, we recommend you use one that first analyses the nature of damage and then gives you a quote on a set of agreed recovery targets.

SAVE MONEY Tip #4 – Avoid the need for Hard Drive Recovery in Future!

I know you are going to groan, I expect it. However it is essential for me to say this serves as a reminder to spur you on to do better, so you do not have a problem like this ever again! So here goes…

If you have already had a failure and need to recover your data, then you now know about the data recovery prices. You do not want to repeat it again I am sure of that.

If you want to be happy in future and save on data recovery services costs – then do this!

If you are reading this to help a friend or client, then we strongly suggest you implement some precautionary measures of your own too.

We would suggest the following precautionary measures so that you can minimize the damage that can occur:

1. Plug the wires in properly when you DIY (and use a power filter in your power supply)
2. Avoid throwing your devices around – look after them! There are tiny parts inside soldered together that can break. Cable connectors can become loose.
3. Keep device away from water – we tend to accept technology into all parts of our lives yet forget they aren’t all designed to be near the pool or in the rain.
4. Monitor and defend device health – install malware protection and anti-viruses (an absolute must)
5. Always use the USB ‘Remove Safely’ Option (or as written in Windows 10 “Safely remove Hardware and Eject Media”) – look for the icon at the bottom right of your computer screen.
6. Keep backups! In most cases it is cheaper to buy a second drive (an external drive if necessary) and implement a routine to perform backups of your data and important files. These days it is easier than most people think.

There are many ways to implement a backup process. You could buy an external hard drive or Solid State Drive (SSD) and use software.

I’ve recommended before a hard drive docking station so you can easily connect internal drives (that are typically cheaper than an external dive with it’s own case).

That said, if you want a nice sleek new external SSD then you can buy one of these with its own USB connection. Why wouldn’t you? They are super quiet and super fast. Not to mention super cool! Just be prepared to pay more.

A final word on hard drive data recovery prices

One thing I didn’t mention in detail above, is that a reputable business will offer to assess your drive first to determine what kind of damage it has sustained. Once they have performed an initial analysis, they can discuss with you not only the cost, but also the likelihood of success. Remember that partial recovery may be possible and worthwhile. In my experience and based on my observations and research, a typical cost should be around $250 to $350 for a basic recovery.

If you’re wondering how you can recover permanently deleted files, and you’re not a computer tech then there may be a part of you that thinks it’s impossible. However depending on what has transpired with your computer it’s worth a shot, and with this article it could be easier than you think. If you’re highly efficient in emptying out the recycling bin regularly, you may now face the problem of having accidentally deleted some precious files, permanently. Luckily, there are ways that you can salvage your hard work.

Some friends of mine love to hit the <Shift> key and <Delete> key at the same time, which also permanently deletes files. If not, you may have accidentally hit the delete button on an important file that you weren’t supposed to delete.

However you arrived at this point, read on below to recover the files you need.

Recovering Files from Previous Versions (in File History)

The first way that you can recover files that you deleted permanently is to get back their previous versions. This is for files that you got rid of by using the “Shift + Delete” keys (or other ways). That is, if you have File History set up. If not you can skip to the next section. I suggest you should read this at some point though, so you have an easy file recovery method for next time. Click to skip to the next section.

NOTE: I strongly advise against getting in the habit of hitting the <Shift> and <Delete> keys at the same time. Files bypass the recycle bin to be permanently deleted so make it impossible to get your files back using the recycle bin recovery method. There is no great advantage to do this.

If you have File History set up, this is the easiest method that you can implement without using software. All you need to do is remember the correct name of the file that you deleted. If you don’t remember the name at first you can try with a few guesses of the name until you get it right.

Can I use File History?

File History works to recover deleted files in:

• Windows 7
• Windows 8
• and Windows 10

It is worthwhile to set up File History if you haven’t already.

It will mean next time you will be able to use this method, even if you are unable to use it this time around.

NOTE: for File History to work, you need a second or separate drive for Windows to store your versions of your files on. A network drive will do, as will a separate NAS (storage) and an external drive that is normally connected.

If you don’t have a network then you can just go with an external drive. Ideally you would attach it to your docking station if you use a laptop or tablet instead of a desktop computer.

I guess by now you can see you need to have File History already turned on to recover permanently deleted files in Windows 7 Windows 8 and Windows 10, which all have the ability to use File History. However Microsoft never supplies Windows with File History turned on out of the box (as standard).

Why doesn’t Microsoft turn on this ability to recover permanently deleted files?

It is because they can’t! The reason is Microsoft design file history to be stored separately to the main or only drive in your computer. It is a layer of safety.

Hence you need to specify a second alternate drive for File History to work. This can be on your own network (or separate external drive). You need this before Windows can save your file history. Since only you can know how you configure this for your particular situation, only you can set it up.

It sure would be nice to have that as a prompt early during installation or first few uses though!

If an SSD (external solid state drive) is not for you (they are more expensive for say a 500 Gb drive) you can get a normal external (HDD) hard disk drive here (these have much larger storage at 4 Tb and cost less, but the trade off is often size and speed).

Why am, I making such a big deal about File History? It is because File History gives us a way to recover permanently deleted files of course!

So now that we’ve given you the background on File History, if you don’t have it turned on you should consider it so in the future you can use this method on how to recover permanently deleted files in windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10.

We can get back to the first method to use when you need to recover permanently deleted files from ‘previous versions’ of the same file.

Here’s what you need to do to Recover your permanently deleted file using File History:

Step 1: Create a blank file with the same name

Create a new file from the same application as the deleted file and give it the same name. This can be blank as the step title suggests. Just open the application (for example Word or Excel or whatever), and from the menu select ‘FILE’ ‘Save As’.

Step 2: Open File Explorer and click ‘Restore Previous Versions’

After creating the file, find it with File Explorer (you can hover over the file as per the image to check it is the right one).

Step 3: Select the most recent version of your file from File History

Once you complete the previous step, Windows will search the system for any previous versions of the file that it has created via the File History system.

Once you receive a list of them, select the latest file and select the option to “Restore” and you recover your permanently deleted file (or files).

It is actually very easy to recover deleted files this way. But what if you haven’t turned on File History?

Well, then we need to resort to software to get your data back. Please remember to set up File History for next time to save yourself the trouble.

Recover Permanently Deleted Files Through Software

Using the help of third-party software or tool, you can safely recover files you deleted permanently. In the market, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from which can differ in speed and performance.

One thing they share in common is that they all save you the trouble of having to redo a lot of work after deleting some files accidentally. Same goes at other times when a bug or virus can potentially corrupt the file which can lead to problems with the opening. If you know all about deleted files and the Recycle Bin, then skip on down to the start of the procedure.

Microsoft knows that anyone can delete files at some point and find they need them back later.

This is so common that Microsoft created an extra step in the deletion process. This normally just goes on the background so you don’t see it.

We’re going to cover where to find restored files once you have them from your recycle bin too.

Your computer moves normally deleted files to a (semi) hidden storage location called the Recycle Bin.

If you’ve been using Windows 10 or older versions for a while, you probably already know about the recycle bin.

For all other purposes the files appear to be deleted. The operating system relocates them to the Recycle Bin. This gives you a second chance to recover deleted files in Windows 10. It is similar in older versions of Windows.

Microsoft tried a different way in Windows 7. That has been discontinued. Users had to configure it for most installations so it was not widely used.

How to Recover Deleted Files Windows 10 Free (from Recycle Bin)

Step 1: Search on your desktop for the Recycle Bin.

The Recycle Bin is a Windows location in which all your normally deleted files are stored.

You can recover deleted files Windows 10 free from the Recycle Bin (shown on the left). When you hover over the icon, Windows 10 shows a simple message explaining what it is.

Step 2: Open the Recycle Bin

Double click to open the Recycle Bin, or click once to select the icon and press <Enter> on your keyboard. Double tap on the icon on a tablet without a keyboard.

Step 3: Search in the Recycle Bin for the Files You Want to Recover

The view you get when the Recycle Bin is open, is something very similar to File Explorer (if you ever use that App or program).

NOTE: It looks like File Explorer because you are viewing the deleted file storage location using a tailored version of File Explorer! If you need any more proof see the image below. It shows that you are actually viewing the Recycle Bin using File Explorer, when you hover your mouse over the File Explorer icon on the task bar. (You can see this is when you already have the Recycle Bin open.)

This image shows multiple explorer windows (3 of them) AND the recycle bin all popping up when the mouse is used to hover over the File Explorer icon in the task bar. If you have the recycle bin already open it is also a quick way to jump there to recover your deleted files.

Got it?

Okay, so I admit, maybe that is too much information. I think it is handy to understand just to help you know your way around Windows 10 just that little bit better.

Your files are shown in the part of the window to the right, below the heading icons and search bar. Your files will be shown in one of a number of ways. They might be shown as icons, with images for pictures and program icons for software files, as below.

Recycle Bin view

Alternatively your deleted files might be shown in ‘Details’ view, where they are listed along with a column showing the original location of the file and date deleted. This is a handy view to help you find and recover deleted files if you know the date they were deleted.

TIP: To change view, click on the ‘View’ tab and select say ‘Details’ if you’d like to see data about your deleted files. Once done, you can click back on the ‘Manage’ Tab (immediately below ‘Recycle Bin Tools’).

When about to restore deleted files Windows 10 can show you a detailed view, so you can see the original file location. This helps later to find deleted files you restore, as Windows 10 puts them back where they came from.

Step 4: Select the Files you want to Recover

You might have only deleted a few files and want to restore all files. In this case do the following.

Recover all deleted files in Windows 10 Free (Optional)

(Optional) You can click ‘Restore All Files’ to recover deleted files; Windows 10 allows you to restore all files without selecting them first using this method.

It might mean you recover many more files than you need and you might find it surprising that other files you thought you deleted have popped back again. It might also annoying to have to delete them again. None the less, this is the easiest way to recover deleted files Windows 10 free and very quick.

Otherwise you can select one or more unique files and then recover them.

Select and Restore Deleted Files in Windows 10

Click or tap any file in the list once and that single file is highlighted.

NOTE: When you select one of more picture files in the Recycle Bin, the tabs at the top automatically change to show ‘Picture Tools’. This is automatic because Microsoft programmed it into File Explorer in Windows 10 (now you might understand see why we make that other note above about the recycle bin being housed in File Explorer). However it is of no use to recover deleted photos for us in this situation. To do this continue below.

If you want to recover deleted photos in Windows 10 you will notice this view when you select a photo in the Recycle Bin. It is just a relic of File Explorer.

You have already selected a single file.

To select several adjacent files, click the first file then hold down the <Shift> key and click the last file in the group.

To select non-adjacent files, click the first file then hold down the <Ctrl> key and click on each other file you also want to select. You can use this to leave gaps so you do not recover all deleted files.

Step 5: Click the ‘Restore Selected Items’ Icon to Recover Deleted Files

If you hover over the Icon that looks like a page and a green arrow with the words ‘Restore Selected Items’, it will show a post-it note that explains it will “move the selected items to their original locations on your computer”. As indicated, it will restore deleted files Windows 10 has in it’s recycle bin location (or rather the ones you selected first).

This is reason why it helps to have viewed these deleted files in ‘Details’ view and to have noted their original location before you do this step. (See the tip in Step 3 above.)

Click the Icon that looks like a page and a green arrow with the words ‘Restore Selected Items’ to recover deleted files you have selected. You guessed it, this will recover deleted files Windows 10 free! Nothing else to it.

Use the above icon to restore deleted files from the recycle bin.

The selected files will disappear from the Recycle Bin and return “whence they came”!

So, well-done when you have reached this point as you have retrieved your deleted files; thanks to Windows 10 software it’s free.

After many years of using Windows, I laugh at myself sometimes when I wish there was an ‘undo’ button for something I did in the real world. It is true that Microsoft have us looking around to see what else we can ‘undo’ in our lives, LOL.

Luckily, to recover deleted files in Windows 10 free is definitely one of things that can be done.

Find deleted files

When you look at the header of the deleted files, remember first to look for where to find restored files from recycle bin.

As per the image below, there should be a column showing the original file location.

Before you do it I recommend you to:

• note it down by the old pen and paper method,
• take a print screen,
• use the sniping tool (my preference).

If you can’t see the full path, you can drag the column wider at the top.

The file path under ‘Original Location’ shows where you will find restored files from recycle bin, after you have recovered them.

Take note of where you deleted your file from. That same location is where Windows will recover the file to.

At very least make sure you know the name of the retrieved files.

If you are not sure where to find the deleted files once recovered, open File Explorer and go to a location where you think it might be (or higher in the file structure). If you are not sure at all where it is, then just click on “This PC” or similar description for your device.

Type your retrieved deleted files’ name(s) in the search bar top right hand side (one at a time), and press <Enter>.

Now, hopefully you have recovered deleted files Windows 10 free and have found them.

If you haven not been able to find your deleted files in the recycle bin at all, then the following sections can help you.

WARNING! Do not click ‘Empty Recycle Bin’.

If you hover over the Recycle Bin Icon in this view (top left) a note will appear to explain that if you click this icon, you will permanently “Delete all items in the Recycle Bin”.

Be wary not to empty your recycle bin unless you really need to. Otherwise it becomes more difficult to recover deleted files Windows 10 free (but we can help you there too with free software).

If you do this by mistake, or you need to do it to clear up disk space, be warned that you will find it more difficult to recover deleted files. This makes the files permanently deleted. It is harder to recover permanently deleted files, but not impossible.

Do Not Delete Your Files Like This:

Warning: Some people get into the habit of using a special command to delete files in Windows 10. I explain that below.

Using the Shift Delete Method

If you want to delete files so they bypass the Recycle Bin and are immediately permanently deleted, you can use the Shift Delete method.

Select the file or files you want to permanently delete and hold down the <Shift> key and then press your <Delete> key or <Backspace> key.

Avoid using shift delete to allow recovering deleted files in Windows 10

You wiull not find files deleted in this way in the Recycle Bin.

It is as if you have deleted a file normally then gone into the Recycle Bin and selected it and pressed delete again, or clicked the ‘Empty Recycle Bin’ icon. Gone and not easy to recover.

You can not recover deleted files that have been removed with the ‘Shift Delete’ method. (See below how to get these back.)

Some people think they are helping their computer by not blocking up the memory with shift-delete. This is not really true. There may be some valid reasons for deleting files this way, depending on your needs, but this is not one of them.

For most people, please do try not to develop a habit of using this method to permanently delete files. It is unnecessary for most people and will only cause you difficulty.

No matter how your files have disappeared, if they are not in the Recycle Bin it is time to call in the big guns of data recovery.

Background

In this article we give some background to how file deletion works in Windows.

There are many ways to delete files. You may have simply deleted files in file explorer. Or you mighty hit an ‘X’ symbol in a photo viewer or other App. However it sometimes indicates delete rather than what it most-often means: to close the file.

You might hit a delete button adjacent to the button you really wanted. I call it a case of “rapidis clickus”.

Or you might simply miss the correct button. 

With tablet devices like the Surface Pro, to miss the correct button sure is easy to do. They have ever increasing resolution pushing the buttons closer together and making them tinier on-screen. I dare say we’ve all done it at some point.

No Matter

No matter how you did it, in the case of simply deleted files we help you step by step assisted by the screen shots below.

Sometimes, particularly when you realised immediately as it happens, you can just click an “Undo” button if supplied.

Alternatively (and depending on the program or App) you might be able to use the Windows 10 shortcut of <Ctrl> (key) combined with the <z> key on the keyboard (this keyboard short cut is often just shown as <Ctrl> <z> or <Ctrl> + <z>, or even <Ctrl> + <Z> although there is no use for the shift key.

However if you deleted it a while ago, and it wasn’t your last operation, then ‘Undo’ will not work for you.

Recover Deleted Files Not in the Recycle Bin

Once you have permanently deleted files, they are invisible to Windows. Luckily there are free software programs that help you recover them.

It is possible in practice though ‘hidden’ from Windows. The operating system removes the index of the file and first part of the file.

It is kind of like removing an address from the post office for mail delivery. The house is still there if you go down the street to find it!

Be Aware

This allows Windows 10 to reuse that space in memory to write other data to that block of memory whenever it needs. The more you use your computer the greater the chance of over-writing the file. This is why it is best to try to recover such files soon after deletion.

It is crucial to not write more data or save any more files. If you want to recover permanently deleted files, that is.

Similarly you should minimize any activity on your Windows 10 computer. Put it off until after you use the free software to recover those missing files. The bulk of the file remains hidden until it is overwritten.

There are a number of software programs you can use to recover deleted files in Windows 10 free. Some have a portion free.

Some are:

• Restoration (recover deleted files Windows 10 free software)
• Recuva (recover deleted files Windows 10 free software)
• Mac Data Recovery (not for Windows, rather for Apple Mac computers, included for completeness of the list).

Luckily my wife has an iPhone 5 so I checked with her and indeed she had deleted notes. She asked “how can I recover deleted notes on my iPhone 5?” I showed her using the method below. It works to retrieve deleted notes on iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s, even if you have deleted several notes. Read on, it’s super quick!

How to recover deleted notes on iPhone 5 without backup

Now to recover notes on your iPhone 5 is very similar. Though there are some similarities, it is not exactly the same.

It’s only slightly different. But I wanted to make it clear and easy with screen shots so it is easy to follow.

Read on below to see how it is done, with annotated screen copies from my wife’s iPhone 5.

How to recover deleted notes iPhone 5 for free:

The screenshots below show you step by step.

Step 1 Go to the primary menu in notes

If you are Starting from within a note, tap at the top left of screen, once on the ‘Notes’ word (top left of screen). Then tap once on the back arrow (<) at the next screen (not shown, but it’s in the same place).

Step 2 Look for the Recently Deleted Notes Folder line.

If you have some iPhone Recently Deleted Notes saved, they will look like the highlighted row below. If you deleted you notes without backup, do not worry as this is where Apple have temporarily stored your deleted notes.

Step 3 Tap on the row or text to select and view all the recently deleted notes.

If you have several deleted notes they will appear in a list with a little of the text of each note so you can tell which ones they are.

Note in the screen copy it tells you that you can recover notes deleted up to 30 days ago with this method. I’ve blurred the notes on my wife’s phone just so she doesn’t kill me! I mean, to maintain her privacy…

Step 4 Select the note you want to recover

Tap the note in the list and the entire note will pop up. This note is not yet ready to use. It looks like your note, but it is still in the Recently Deleted notes folder at this point.

Be warned that if you delete by tapping on the trash icon at this point you will remove your note. That means remove it from the recently deleted notes section.

If you do, you will no longer be able to recover the note after that (using this method). So be careful not to do it unless you really want to remove any sign of that note.

Note that you can’t edit or send the note from here. You need to recover the note from this folder first.

Step 5 Tap as if you are going to edit.

This will bring up a message like in the screen shot below. You can cancel or tap recover – this is the trick to how to recover deleted notes on iPhone 5 without backup.

Select Recover when prompted and you have finished.

Step 6 Tap Recover

Simple! That is how to retrieve deleted notes on iPhone 5! It’s exactly how you can retrieve deleted notes on the iPhone 5s too.

Your note is still visible on the screen, but some subtle changes on screen indicate that the note is now back within the normal notes folder.

For example you can now send the note (the send not is back to the normal icon and is no longer greyed out). Contrast the above screenshot with the one below to see what I mean.

Step 7 (Optional)

If you deleted more than one note on your iPhone 5, and you want to recover more than one note, you can go back to the recently deleted notes folder again and retrieve your other notes by repeating the above steps.

You might think it is pretty straight forward once you know how. But that is the case with anything to do with computers and smartphones in general.

The great thing is when you know, you can help yourself if it happens if you have a iPhone 5 or help a friend or client. It’ll make you look good!

Apple iPhone notes recovery – Can you recover deleted notes on iPhones othe than the 5?

It depends. I’ve checked on my old iPhone 4 and it doesn’t seem to have the deleted notes folder. (I did a test and couldn’t get my test note back using a similar method.)

• This means that if you have an iPhone 4 like my old one, then you are not able to recover your deleted notes this way.

What Happened in My Situation?

In my case I deleted notes accidentally during the night. Something to do with my eyes squinting in the dark!  In the morning I had to get my deleted iPhone notes back.

So I did some searching and found a site or two that helped, and some that want you to pay. They didn’t exactly show what I was looking for. One comment I saw helped because it gave me the clue about the iPhone deleted notes folder. So I researched that.

During the recovery of deleted notes on my iPhone

I decided to write up this article to help anyone who might have the same situation because I saw several sites that sell a product to recover your notes for a fee (typically 70 to 90 dollars).

[Updated and works for more recent iPhones! -Ed]

I’m not saying these are not worth it when you really need them. But it is better that I found you can do a basic recovery for free. Whether or not you can use it depends on your situation.

Save Money – do it for free!

I think you can save money if you check this method first to know if you can get your notes back for free before you spend any money.

With this method you can recover notes deleted up to 30 days ago.

Read on below for more information to see how I got my notes back on my iPhone without a backup for free and how you can recover yours.

This is how you do it starting from within the Notes location:

This works the same for all recent iPhones up to and including the current iPhone 11.

Step 1: Tap the ‘< Notes’ text at the top left of screen.

This assumes you are in a note to start these steps, and gets you up to the list of all your notes.

Step 2: Tap the ‘<’ symbol at the top left of screen

Do this to go further back in the notes menu.

Step 3: In the Notes menu, find the iPhone Recently Deleted Folder

If your phone has kept your deleted notes, there will be a row displaying the number of notes deleted that you can recover. The row is titled ‘Recently Deleted’.

Step 4: Tap on the Recently Deleted notes count row.

Do this to display the deleted notes.

You will see your deleted notes with some of the text to allow you to identify them.

Step 5: Tap to select the note you want to recover

Just tap to select and open your desired note in the Deleted Notes folder. You should see the full notes content.

Step 6: Double tap in the middle of the screen

Double tap on the note as if you were to edit the note on the note to bring up the Recently Deleted Notes options.

Step 7: Tap ‘Recover’

This will send the note back to your notes collection from where it came. Your view will still remain looking at the note. You will notice that now you can edit the note (just tap and start typing) at will.

There, you’ve retrieved deleted notes on an iPhone!

If you want to go back to the home menu of the notes section then just go back using the same steps above and you can see that you will see that the number of deleted notes visible in the Recently Deleted folder is reduced by one.

If there are no notes left that you can recover by this method that row will not appear.

My Story – How I Retrieved Notes on my iPhone

During the night I use my light on the iPhone to see and get around in the dark. However sometimes I have found in the dark or sudden bright light, and especially if my eyes are barely open, the fidgeting of my fingers can do some harm.

Last night I must have deleted the note that I had been editing most recently while flicking the screen during the night to turn on the quick access light.

Unlike my wife who uses an app to turn on a torch on her phone I use the quick access light. To do this (in case you don’t know about it) you slide your finger up from the bottom of the screen.

This allows you quick access to several of the most handy functions like camera, screen rotation lock and light.

At the bottom left you will see the flashlight quick access option button. It is located in a very similar position to the bin icon to delete the note when you are in the Notes app!

What happened?

So this morning I realized my notes disappeared on my iPhone overnight!

I found that my most recent note which had a lot of useful measurements and notes for some home maintenance was missing. I really needed those notes.

At first I thought oh no, I lost my notes on my iPhone! But then I thought maybe I can get the notes back and I wondered “how do I get my notes back on my iPhone?”

I’m afraid this is not the first time I’ve done this, so I knew the note was likely to be missing because of accidental deletion.

What I did to recover deleted notes –iPhone Screenshots

First I shook the phone side-to-side, because that is the easiest way to recover a just deleted note on the iPhone. That is provided you have not done any other action.

This is also the iPhone Notes undo action when in Notes – just shake the iPhone side to side and look for the undo message.

Up came the option to undelete as I suspected it would. There was the option to ‘Undelete Note’. So I did tap that option.

It worked. But the result was less than I hoped for – a deleted note was recovered, yet it was another note, not the one I was worried about! So then I guessed I must have deleted more than one note on my iPhone during the night!

But I was able to recover the main note I was most concerned about in the end.

I searched online and found some software selling companies at the top of the results. That was fine but I was hoping to find a way how to get deleted notes back on iPhone 6 or 7 without paying for it.

Not that I’m cheap but if I don’t need a sledge hammer why pay for one?! It’s not only that. My reasoning is typically software requires several steps to download and install.

Often the built-in methods are quicker and easier.

Then eventually I found some forum comments that suggested there was indeed a built-in way to get my Notes back! There is something called the iPhone recently deleted folder. This is when I started testing, and sure enough, I had files in there on my phone.

How To Recover Deleted Notes On iPhone 6 Without Backup in More Detail:

These screenshots show how to recover deleted notes on iPhone 7 Plus, but are practically identical for all modern iPhones as it is iOS based.

Step 1: Tap the ‘< Notes’ text at the top left of screen as indicated below.

Step 2: Tap the ‘<’ symbol in the same position at the top left of screen

Do this as per the screen copy below to go further up in the notes menu.

Step 3: Now you should be at the main Notes Folders menu, look for a row specifying the number of deleted notes

This is how to find deleted notes on iPhones with a recent version of the iOS. Normally an iPhone will keep the Notes deleted over the last 30 days. If your phone has kept your deleted notes, there will be a row displaying the number of notes deleted that you can recover. The row is titled ‘Recently Deleted’ and across to the right is the number of deleted notes stored.

Step 4: Tap on the Recently Deleted notes count row.

Do this to display the deleted notes. Hopefully this is where your iPhone notes disappeared to.

You will see your deleted notes with some of the text to allow you to identify them.  In the example below there is just the one deleted note.

Step 5: Tap to select the note you want to recover

Just tap to select and open your desired note in the Deleted Notes folder. You should see the full notes content. Please  understand you have not yet recovered it at this stage. Notice how the send icon (top right) and is greyed out? You also cannot edit it at this point.

Step 6: Tap the Screen On the Note

Single or double tap on the note as if you were to edit the note in the current view. Instead of editing, this is to bring up the Recently Deleted Note options which are a simple choice of ‘Cancel’ or more likely useful for you tap ‘Recover’ to restore your note.

Step 7: Tap to Recover your recently deleted note

This will send the note back to your notes collection from where it came. You will still remain looking at the note. You will notice that now you can send (the icon is no longer greyed out and is returned to usual) or edit the note (just tap and start typing) at will.

There! You’ve recovered deleted iPhone notes!
