Unique and Best Microsoft Surface Pro Accessory

Microscope and Surface Pro – a match made in heaven! Click image to view and buy this microscope on Amazon. Winner of the most unique Surface Pro Accessory.

The unique award goes to this USB digital microscope by Omax.

YES, Microscope!

It is so awesome you want one even though you might not have thought about using one since studying!

Science reports were never so easy, with its built in digital camera straight to USB. The compound microscope magnifies from 40X-2000X.

If you have kids or want to be a young again, you have to get one.

If you work in the scientific field, having one of these on your desk connected as an accessory to your Surface Pro is bound to impress you and anyone else who walks into your office (or home).

It cannot rate as the best surface pro accessory overall because it is not for everyone, but it is a great gift idea.

A gift for yourself, perhaps?

Alternatively (and I emphasize we want to save you money) the runner up is this microscope with digital camera which works differently but is cheaper and has a higher resolution camera, with a discount on ready made slides at the time of writing (look for the Promotion).

I know it is not one of the branded Microsoft accessories, but it does lead a nice introduction to those that are.

Introduction to the best Microsoft Surface Pro Accessories

I know this introduction is a long way into the article, but I wanted to make sure I inserted that unique Surface Pro accessory first! So cool!

Note: My wife and I are long time Surface Pro owners and fans. A few non-airbrushed photos of our own tablets throughout this site prove it!

Other family members have bought their own after seeing ours. We have bought several Surface tablets and many Surface Pro accessories.

I am an Engineer with 27 years’ experience and Casey co-writer for TheTechMentor.com is a very experienced computer tech and IT consultant (see the About Us for more, well, about us).

What sort of things will you find in this article? We have the best list of Surface Pro accessories for you here, based on our experience, research, and sought after accessories, put together this year.

Must-have Surface Accessories

With such a big investment in your Surface Pro, you are wise to look for accessories that will protect your New Surface further below.

Another important accessory, we help you find the best micro SD card to increase Surface Pro memory. Rather than a long list of test results, we reference them and get straight to the point to show you the best one for you.

We have also identified what we think are the best Surface Pro USB hub, keyboard options and replacement chargers in our list.

Whether you have just bought the new Surface Pro X model, the not-so-recent 2017 model, or Surface Laptop, or have an older Surface Pro 3 or Surface Pro 4, I want to cover all your Surface Pro accessories. So, where it makes sense to do so I’ll point out the appropriate accessory for your device and mention any limits you might need to know. I want to make sure you get the right accessory for your Surface Pro (or other Surface model).

Has someone you know just bought a new Surface Pro, or one of the Surface Pro accessories below? Then share this page with them – sharing is caring!

You can help us by clicking through from here if you decide to buy – but you are under no obligation to do so! If not ready to buy it would be nice of you to come back here to click through when you are ready (you can add a bookmark or save this page as a favorite). As I wrote above, it is good karma!

The Best Microsoft Surface Pro Accessories:

Under this category are solely Microsoft Surface accessories (i.e. Microsoft branded Surface accessories).

The dock has to be regarded as the best Microsoft Surface Pro Accessory, because it just brings so much functionality. Click image to see more photos and buy on Amazon.

Microsoft Surface Pro Docking Station

The best of all Microsoft Surface Pro accessories we say is the Microsoft Surface Pro Dock. This accessory is compatible with most Microsoft Pro devices, i.e. the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, Surface Book, Surface Pro, and Surface Laptop.

There is also this Microsoft docking station which is cheaper and is pretty much the same as far as service. The only problem might be whether there are any left (as there was low stock at the time of writing).

The most recent version of the Microsoft Surface Pro docking station is the 1661 here, but that will cost you more.

Greater power capability means support for greater power draw accessories or longer life with more standard accessories.

How to get the most out of it?

Tablet mode is brilliant, but when you get back to the office or home (or the office at home) you will no doubt want to connect to speakers, larger monitor(s) and keyboard. Maybe you can do like me and have a wireless keyboard and mouse pair connect via WiFi and a USB WiFi receiver. Not to mention instant connection to all the other peripherals you probably have.

There are blue tooth and Wi-Fi connections of course. These easily cover you for mouse or keyboard, or both.

I still operate in Surface tablet mode quite a bit when at home, don’t get me wrong. Moving around the home, and Skype-ing from anywhere is cool. (Anywhere? Except maybe the washroom! Maybe that is not so cool…)

However, there is a certain ‘home base’ or ‘HQ’ feel about setting your Surface up as a PC too.

After all, that is what having a 2-in-1 is about. The Surface Pro certainly has the power and capacity for it.

When docked it is easy to have your Surface model hooked up to an external drive for automatic backup via File History. Never lose a file again, and never pay to get lost files back. See how to set up File History here (and how to use it! Opens in a new tab). Please do it as it can really save you!

Specifications:

4x USB 3.0 ports. 2x Mini Display Ports. 1x Audio out port. 1x Gigabit Ethernet Port.

There is yet another reason why you must have a Surface Pro Dock – instant power and recharge. Need I say more?

All right, I’ll say just a little more.

You can use a portable (smaller) surface charger when on the go. Still, it just seems right to dock and know it takes care of everything at once.

You kind of do get two computers for the price of the dock in addition to the actual Surface tablet 2-in-1. Or is that three in total: tablet, laptop and Desktop PC? Bargain!

You do not have to get a dock I suppose (although I did).

Superseded Docking Station Model for Surface Pro 3:

The following dock is superseded as stated, but some of you might want to find the older style stand-dock within the Surface Pro 3 accessories category.

We loved using this and had to have one when they came out and I still have my Surface Pro 3 docked that way. To reemphasize; it is not for all Surface devices, only the Surface Pro 3.

Here is a link if you like the idea and want to buy the old docking station with in-built stand.

It was a nice design and functions fine.

My only warning based on my experience, is that the back does keep heat in.

It can cause your Surface Pro 3 to run hotter and have reduced performance.

If you run your machine hard for long hours, you might find it can overheat and performance will deteriorate. Secondly you will probably want to set it up higher than your desk, then use a separate keyboard on the desk.

I often used my Surface Pro 3 in a dual keyboard arrangement.

NOTE: Do not buy this stand style docking station for a Surface 3. The two are not compatible!

You could get by very well with the Arc Mouse and Type Cover keyboard. These certainly are two of the best Surface Pro accessories.

Microsoft Arc Mouse Accessory

Microsoft Arc Mouse accessory

I am impressed with the arc mouse after many years of ‘use and abuse’ although I was a little skeptic at first.

I bought one for my wife.

She loves the feel of the scroll feedback mechanism.

It really looks different; the mouse, reinvented.

I believe Microsoft designed it that way so it can snap flat to make it easier to pack to travel (which also turns it off).

I admit her arc mouse has copped some punishment because at night when I walk past I have been known to smack it flat to turn it off (when I notice the cool blue sensing light).

To be fair it is far more robust than I would have originally given it credit. It has never skipped a beat! By this I mean it works well, not that I never missed to smack it flat!

Factoid: you may know the Microsoft Arc Mouse connects to your surface pro via blue-tooth so it doesn’t consume your Surface Pro’s one-and-only built-in USB port.
Smart in many ways this mouse is (read in a Yoda-like voice if you like).
(Sorry, this is a fact, not a factoid!)

The arc mouse therefore is highly recommended.

Now there are several different editions:

This Surface Arc Mouse is cobalt blue, and is the newest version. It also comes in black, burgundy and light gray. You can scroll vertically and horizontally with the “innovative full scroll plane”.

You must have Bluetooth!

This Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse is similar with touch to scroll function (no horizontal scroll built-in). It is cheaper.

So if you want an awesome mouse but save money at the same time, this is the one to get.

Type Cover Accessory

A close second must-have Microsoft Surface Pro Accessory is the Type Cover keyboard.

Although if you don’t want a docking station (and some people don’t ever use one), it becomes the number one must-have Surface accessory.

We originally bought and love the Microsoft Blue (even though it is either cyan or bright blue – that is just what I call it).

Bright Blue Type Cover

FEWER TYPOS!

Lesser-known facts

I have found the Surface Type Cover keyboard is quieter than any other keyboard I have ever used.

The integral mouse pad also is quieter than your standard mouse.

People who don’t have real experience with these keyboard accessories will not be able to tell you that! We do!

Think using it in bed next to my wife sleeping. With the backlight it is just made for that!

In addition the fact it is a back-lit keyboard is awesome and works perfectly.

All these combined can be handy when you need it, like when you are watching – er, I mean – working late at night next to your spouse, or not wanting to wake kids! (Well, maybe that is just me.)

It comes in colors matching the other most recent accessories (use the text link for the cobalt blue, burgundy etc.).

This version the Microsoft Surface Pro Type Cover with fingerprint ID costs only slightly more (currently with a good discount at the time of writing) and it has the larger mouse track pad and the FINGERPRINT ID sensor. Cool!

As we haven’t used this one ourselves it was difficult to put it ahead of the standard new type cover. I imagine if you work late or wake up early and jump straight onto your Surface Pro, then the fingerprint ID is a nice touch to save typing your password. The technology is quite mature now.

Both keyboard accessories are compatible with Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 as well as the more recent Surface Pro (2017) Surface Pro 6, Pro 7 and Surface Pro X.

This one is a more recent version of the Type Cover. More expensive but more recent.

Save money or get the most recent – it’s up to you!

Other Surface Type Covers

We also own the gray (professional looking) and the purple Surface type covers. If you only have the tablet then we strongly recommend you buy the keyboard as your next best accessory.

It helps protect your tablet screen, first of all. Otherwise you end up buying a cover anyway, right?

Secondly, there are more convenient functions available direct from the keyboard. For example, you can screen copy easily.

It has the mouse track pad built-in.

You can initiate a screen copy with the Surface Pen, of course. However, I still find it easier (or more practical) with the type cover. Now, where did I put that Surface Pen…?

One interesting thing you might not know – The French or Spanish Keyboard

I promised to make this an interesting read rather than just a boring list of Microsoft Surface accessories.

The AZERTY French keyboard (note the differences to the QWERTY). Whilst this is not mine, remind me to clean it before I photograph it next time… Click the image to buy the latest design with the spaced keys and larger mouse track pad from the Amazon store in France.

Did you know in different countries, the keyboard has different arrangement of keys?

Some are quite similar with only a few characters different here and there, and others are very different.

You probably know the English keyboard as QWERTY. These are the first 6 top left-hand side letters on the keyboard.

However, the French New Surface Pro Keyboard has the first letters as AZERTY.

The many different accents used in the French language means that the function of the French keyboard is necessarily very different.

So not only does the Surface type cover come in several different colors, it is one of the most varied accessories because it also comes in different language key arrangements too!

Not only for the French living in the US, some Canadians will want to get a English-French Keyboard as an accessory to their Surface Pro. Also great if you live in… oh where else to they speak French?

DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE BY MISTAKE if you only want the QWERTY keyboard!

Tip: When you hear someone complain that their <A> and <Q> keys are mixed up or <M> and <;> keys are swapped, suspect the language of the keyboard!

Surface Go Keyboard

The Surface Go is still very popular.

Here is the cheaper Surface Go Keyboard.

This is the Microsoft Surface Go Signature Type Cover (Platinum).

You can go for the newer Surface Go Signature Type Cover here, which will cost you just a little more (around $30 more).

To see more go back to the index at the start.

Replacement Surface Keyboard:

Help for existing Surface Keyboard problems (as I wrote above there is more to this article than just a long list of Microsoft surface accessories). If you are one of the unlucky ones for whom there is a problem with your type cover, then try checking all the connectors, cleaning them and also see if you can download new driver for it.

No need to get a replacement if you can fix it, right?

If you do not have success with that then I suggest you buy a new one, in a new color. You might be shocked by this, but it is such innovative technology to have the tactile feedback in such a thin keyboard cover, you really would not want to be without one. Students (apply stern voice here), I point out that you need to take some care with this technology rather than just throw it in a bag and throw the bag on the floor!

For non-Microsoft branded Surface Pro keyboards, which can save you money, see just a little further below.

Best Microsoft Surface Pro Accessories for Entertainment

Eye Popping Surface Pro Accessory

We bought a device that allows us to project the surface pro screen direct to our big screen TV. It makes the Surface Pro the perfect device for streaming, projecting and watching movies.

It is a a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter to connect to a screen, using Miracast. There is a USB dongle to insert into your smart TV.

I wanted to put this one into the best accessories section, just because I love it so much. You should have seen my brother-in-law’s eyes!

Shocked and Impressed! (That is my brother-in-law on the right!)

My compromise was to put entertainment directly under the best accessories section.

I find it is very easy to use after the first one or two attempts. Like anything, there is a learning curve yet it is easy for this great accessory. Very easy in fact.

Surface Pro KVM

Well the above two sections just happen to hit the KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) combo! Video device accessories such as a second monitor, do not rank in our list of the top MS Surface accessories (above) for a few reasons:

A video device does not make this list in the above section because you really can get along fine only using the tablet screen for your only display, especially for single person viewing.
Two people viewing a movie works okay.

I don’t think there is a Microsoft branded monitor out there. Feel free to correct me in the comments below If I’m wrong!

This makes a nice segue (“seg-way”) to the next section!

The Best in our opinion is this Samsung monitor.
That said, of course there are very many you can view and try in your local computer or electronics store.

It is a great way to try before you buy.

See them in action first and support your local computer outlet too!

Also rated highly is the Samsung EXO, which places 3rd in the best Surface Pro Accessories.

Best External hard drive for Surface Pro

A hardware option for backups is an external SSD ‘hard drive’. A Solid State Drive is smaller than an external HDD and doesn’t need a separate power source. This makes it a better accessory as it is conveniently portable for on-the-go tablet use.

Of course, the microSD is the best Surface Pro accessory for adding memory, due to the tiny size (and miniscule weight). You insert it into the Surface’s microSD slot in the back under the kickstand.

For large backups and mass storage, you must go for an SSD external drive.

Another more point about backups – I recommend the ‘Seagate backup’ model to make it very easy to prepare backups. But I also have bought Western Digital and others.

Final point on the subject: get a HUGE external drive, the most you can afford.

There are many people out there searching for how to increase Surface Memory because modern massive digital photos and videos, music MP3s and MP4 collections use up that memory FAST!

Stretch your money further

For practically trhe same amount of money, you can get ten times the amount of storage with an HDD.

Check out this 10Tb backupplus hub!

Most Common Surface Pro Accessory – USB-Hub

Most people want to get a USB hub for the Surface Pro.

Let’s face it, with only a single in-built USB port due to the tiny minimalist tablet base-design, you will always find this useful. It will not replace the docking station of course, and it is small enough to carry with your Surface whenever you travel or commute.

You cannot go wrong if you buy a USB hub as a gift for a Surface Pro owner.

Best Surface Accessories for Students

Let’s agree, the best surface accessories for students are often those that are the cheapest.

This would be true for many students anyhow.

This means all the above non-Microsoft brand accessories above are worth a look.

For students who type a lot, I’d recommend a WiFi mouse and keyboard combo.

To see more go back to the index at the start.

Best accessory for biology, medicine and science students

Well, you saw my microscope suggestion right at the top of this article! What a great idea to spark an interest in STEM (science technology engineering and mathematics)!

The ‘type cover’ Microsoft keyboard (also above) is a great one to buy as a gift for a student who might not have bought the cover with their Surface Pro tablet.

Best Surface Pro Accessory for Students

This suggestion is an important one for students:

Make sure you have a backpack with a PADDED laptop section.

Why?

Because many students hae the tendency to throw their tablet into their back pack and forget it’s there.

This means it gets thrown around.

At the end of the day, the Microsoft Surface Pro is high tech hardware with tiny components in the computer boards and cables and wiring all soldered in place. In addition, the manufacturer glues together some parts – I assume for tight fit and size miniaturization. This is in line with the trend of increasingly non-customable tech products.

Consider also that the size makes it less robust than a smartphone.

Back to my point: All this means is you do want to minimize jarring and bending! I make this warning with solid knowledge of people searching for fixes when their surface pro won’t turn on, for example. We can fix the most common cause. In the worst case however, some physical misuse can lead to internal components becoming weakened and broken.

I read in a forum a guy said he would have to warm his Surface Pro with a hair dryer for it to start.

This means loose connections inside. Probably from mistreatment.

Nasty!

Avoid these terrible problems and protect the physical integrity of the device.

To learn more, see this article on what to do when your surface wont turn on.

Surface Pro Accessories for Portability or Mobility

Please take note of the back-back ideas in the above section. for students as they are relevant for carrying your Surface.

The strong message first to get is to make sure you PROTECT IT!

Some big names are investing in battery research.

Elon Musk (of Tesla) for example. The technology will continue to get better, but why wait (and pay for) the next breakthrough technology when these charger accessories will help you right now.

This one is rated at 210 Wh and charges at a maximum of 90 W.

If you are not likely to be in or near a car all the time, then you will likely want to get one of these.

TIP: In our experience, external batteries are great but after a while they don’t quite achieve what the original claims are (in terms of battery life or recharge capability). So get the most powerful money can buy if you are buying for work.

On a positive note, these external batteries are getting better every year.

Other Keyboard accessories for the Surface Pro

I mentioned the surface dock above. You will want a brilliant keyboard to give to better typing performance and ease.

I use a Logitech keyboard and mouse combo.

One thing I like and occasionally find useful is the USB connector WiFi receiver fits inside the mouse so you don’t lose it.

Battery life is really long. Sorry I am not more specific about it, but I have NEVER replaced the batteries.

I’m not sure if it is this exact one, but one like it. You can pay more and get a back-lit keyboard, which is one of the things I love and really find useful about the Surface Type Cover itself.

More Windows Surface Accessories

Using Windows, Surface accessories that help getting the most out of it are:

The Surface Pen stylus

That dial thingy (not the official name!).

More seriously, ‘that dial thingy’ you might have seen around is called a Surface Dial.

It is a very interesting new tool designed by Microsoft to integrate with Windows Surface.

When you are working with only the Surface Pen (without the keyboard or mouse), the Surface Dial makes a great accompaniment.

It readily gives you access to on screen menus and more. So these two combined work well together as Windows Surface accessories.

You expect a learning curve, but no doubt there is a rewarding feeling for exploring its use and knowing you are on the cutting edge with these pair of Windows Surface Pro accessories.

Best Accessories for Surface Pro Protection

Protecting your Surface Book, Surface Pro or Surface Tablet requires getting one or more accessories that cover your Surface in use or in transit.

Has that someone special ever asked you, “Have you got protection?”

Accessories for Microsoft Surface Pro that help provide additional protection are

Type Cover (i.e. keyboard already ‘covered’ above )

Screen protector

Hard Case

Soft case

Backpack with laptop/tablet slot

Well, actually I think these are all covered above.

To see more go back to the index at the start.

If not you can search once you have followed some of the other links provided.

The best accessories for Microsoft Surface are either one of the protective cases or a protective bag or both (not the screen protector in my opinion, as you will see it has a tough screen).

You be wise to get a soft or hard case in addition to the Surface Type Cover. My wife bought a beautiful purple one that goes nicely with her purple type cover keyboard.

Is a Screen Protector necessary?

I never had a screen protector or case (other than the keyboard).

Instead, I bought a backpack with a laptop/tablet slot. I travel (much less so right now!), and a bag with easy access laptop or tablet slot is essential if you will be traveling through airports like me. The padding all around protects my Surface nicely. I’d say it even helps minimize bending when my bag is crammed full for those long trips away.

Whichever way you chose to go, make sure you think about protection. I do not recommend this lightly.

Note: I have a very popular article that gives fixes to web surfers looking for help with a Surface pro not turning on. It works well, unfortunately I cannot help some unfortunate people whose Surface won’t turn on at all because the internals become loose or disconnected. This might have been due to a lack of protection or lack of care and thoughtfulness.

We love readers to come back to read TheTechMentor.com, but not for problems that we can’t fix. So look after your Surface please!

Tough Screen

The newer 2017 Surface Pro and more recent models has gorilla glass on the screen. That stuff is tough! It is also is on iPhone’s and for sure it takes some beating. (Yes, in this case I mean knocking about.)

However having said that they do claim less finger smudging.

In addition, I suppose my engineering brain can see that a flexible membrane over the hardened glass has potential to stop or reduce risk of brittle fracture under certain circumstances. I have not bought and used one on my Surface Pro, but we list it here because I am serious when it comes to accessories for Microsoft Surface Pro protection.

A screen protector accessory must provide some incremental protection particularly for the Surface Pro 3 or 4. One advantage is they are a low cost option for sure.

A Microsoft Surface Pro is a big investment and a wonderful purchase, so look after it!

Replacement kit

Not sure that you call replacement items that come with Surface accessories or just OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts!

In any case, I suppose the Surface Pro and other Surface models (Book, Surface 3 or Surface 4 etc.) have been around long enough that, new parts exist with improved designs and features. So if you are buying a new Surface Pen or the new keyboard, you kind of are getting Microsoft Surface Pro 4 accessories (or Surface Pro 3 accessories). I hope by now we have covered all of those above for you.

The Best gift for Surface Owners

The best gift is the one that will let them get any Microsoft App or accessory they like.

In my opinion though, the docking station is the most useful gift. If you get one of those you can’t go wrong, if they don’t have one already.

I say this, because of all the accessories out there for the Surface and Surface Pro rage, even if you have one you can always find a good use for another. In this case portability, for example you can leave one and use at home and work. (Especially those who work both in the office and away from home after the Covid-19 pandemic which has drastically increased the number of worker at home.)

Microsoft Windows Store Gift Card

I prefer to think of it as a very generous ‘get what pleases you’ style gift.

I prefer to think this, rather than call it ‘I can’t think of what you like’ gift!

Following the gift card line and if appropriate (that is they like games and more from Xbox), you might want to buy Xbox gift cards.

Whatever-else-we-could-think of Surface Pro Accessories

I couldn’t think of what to call this section (giggles – I’m kidding of course. Sort of).

The above are certainly good gifts to buy for Surface and Surface Pro owners. What about other ideas for accessories from our own experience?

Surface Accessories for Internet connection

How you you connect a Surface to the internet?

Well of course one thing we didn’t cover before here is connecting your Surface to the internet.

So let’s do it now.

If you need a wired connection, you will want an Ethernet cable.

See our article for the best Ethernet cables here.

If you do not have a dock which can connect via an Ethernet cable, you will want a USB-Ethernet cable connector accessory for the Surface’s USB connection.

Do understand there is nothing special do to to make it work.

Your Surface pro will connect automatically to the wired Ethernet cable to the internet as soon as you connect it.

It will take precedence over the WiFi connection.

Microsoft Surface Pro Accessory we wish existed

I always wished there was a cable I could use that would connect from the Surface Type Cover to the connector at the base of the Surface Pro tablet.

If anyone EVER hears about something like this, please let me know.

To get around this I have a wireless keyboard and mouse with a wifi receiver that I kepp almost permantly in the one USB on the Surface Pro itself.

Reason 1

That way I could have the type cover disconnected and in a comfortable location such as on my lap or simply on the table (and elbow-hand height). I would then mount the Surface tablet at a good height for my eyes (top of the screen near to even with eyes).

Thankfully, my eyes are much higher than my elbows in a normal seated position! However, for long periods of working it means either a second monitor or a second keyboard plus docking station. All of which I have!

Reason 2

Such a cable would be a great invention for the lounge room. The tablet could then be over on the coffee table, projecting to the TV, and thus avoid the downpour of popcorn crumbs.

The type cover would be handy nearby. If on my lap, I guess it would just have to cope with the popcorn. Maybe I did not think this one through quite as well as the first reason.

As I wrote above, if you know of such a cable accessory then please, PLEASE tell me in the comments!

You’ll probably just tell me to get a WiFi keyboard (I do have one!)

I hope I have been somewhat entertaining, if not thorough. It is now time to wrap up.

If we’ve missed something or you have your own non-Microsoft accessories to add, please write in the comments below.

Has someone you know just bought the New 2017 Surface Pro, or one of the above Surface Pro accessories? Then PLEASE share this page with them for additional ideas – as they say sharing is caring!

Causes and fixes for the Surface Black Screen

I have had clients ask for help with a Surface Pro black screen on several occasions (can be for other Surface models and sometimes called “black screen of Death“!). Sometimes you know it is working or has power as the keyboard lights up but the Surface screen remains black. Sometimes the cursor or mouse pointer is visible onscreen but the rest of the screen is black. There are ways to fix it. Read on to learn how.

Microsoft Surface black screen of Death

I’ve heard it called the ‘Surface Pro 4 black screen of death’ (insert your Surface model and type here!). It is what people, certain techs, say when a Surface Pro 4 black screen won’t turn on, (or their Surface Pro 3 black screen won’t turn on), and it seems it has died.

It does also seem to happen on more recent models, but lets hope with less frequency!

Given it may be a function of Windows rather than the machine, it could help even with a Surface with Windows 11.

In my experience, it has never been as serious as ‘Black Screen of Death’ sounds! All it means really is just that your surface pro screen is black and unresponsive. Some people love to be melodramatic!

So please do not worry, if you think it is as serious as that.

The Microsoft Surface Pro black screen of death can be fixed!
As it can often be for other Surface tablet, book, and laptop models.

Surface Pro Black Screen Won’t Turn On

Not only clients, but I myself have experienced that my Surface Pro 3 black screen won’t turn on. That was the first case quite a long time ago, and fr newer models now. See the link below if you are concerned that yours won’t turn on, because I have already written an article that goes into detail for this problem. You might need to read both articles, in that case.

Surface Pro not turning on black screen (won’t turn on at all)?

As I said, if you have a Surface Book or Surface Pro that won’t turn on with a black screen, I have written an article that has more than 5 different solutions for this problem (each addressing a different cause). Some of the things below might help, but do see the other article.

This article here covers this specific issue that your Surface won’t turn on at all (new tab).

The problem sometimes is quite simple so do check that out.

Surface Black Screen but Keyboard lights up

I have had this one myself too.

The back-lit Surface keyboard is cool, not only because it looks cool and allows you type in the dark (when prepared for watching movies for example), but also because it gives signs of power and life!

You might think if I have had all these problems before then the Surface Pro is not a good table/laptop. However, these things can happen, are not that serious, and I still love my Surface Pro!

The first time I just left it to sit there for a good half hour. I did not know if there was some kind of Windows upgrade going on in the background.

You know it is not good to force a shutdown or restart if that is the case. It can cause problems that are more serious.

Hence, I suggest in the very first instance you leave it for a couple of minutes to maybe 10 minutes.

It is difficult to know if a Windows update is going on while the screen is blank, but I’d say it is unlikely anyway. So, do give it some time and then try the next steps.

Working Surface but Screen Not Working

You’ll know your Surface is working even if the screen is black after login, because it was working to enable you to log in!

Alternatively, if the fan sounds like your Surface is working but the screen is black, or you know it is on because you were working on it and didn’t shutdown, and yet the screen is black and doesn’t seem to respond, then there are two common cases.

First and most simple, is that there is a chance it has just gone to sleep mode.

Second, there may be something going on in Windows or the memory to have caused the screen to no longer be updated. There are multiple reasons why this could happen, but the fixes are what we need to focus on.

The fan often keeps running for several minutes after entering sleep mode or you close the Type Cover. This is to ensure the fans causes airflow to cool down internal components below a satisfactory level.

There are tricks to stop it sooner, but without running a minute or two longer, these parts can actually could become hotter and become damaged!

Microsoft Surface Pro Black Screen with Cursor visible

This is certainly a common problem. Common enough for me to have seen it before I mean.

You can move the cursor or mouse around, click (with no apparent effect) or tap any keyboard key (if you have a Type Cover, for example). So you can see your Surface is working because you can see the cursor or mouse on screen (as per the photo of the screen below).

Apart from the reflection this photo shows a Microsoft Surface Pro black screen with mouse visible. Sometimes instead of a Surface Pro with a totally blank screen, a black screen with cursor is visible instead. This is a useful sign of life!

Yet these actions do not resolve the blank screen with mouse visible only. You’ll need the steps below!

Here are the fixes to try.

Fix black screen of death – Move it!

So the very first thing to try is to move the mouse, tap the screen or keyboard, and briefly press the power button.

You might have tried these things already, so the next thing to try is a shutdown request. I call it this because in some cases your device really is running.

There may be something going on in Windows or the memory to have caused them to update no longer and the screen that stays black.

A common problem is a series of web pages in your browser are chewing all your Surface’s memory and/or CPU (or processors). Especially when you have a lot of tabs open or just a few that have not released memory properly.

I have monitored systems that can take several minutes to complete some long seemingly unnecessary loop or background task, to finally respond to interaction. You will probably need to kill that task or close those browser tabs when you get back in.

Shutdown Request

You can safely press the on-off button of the Surface with a black screen if it is running.

NOTE: By safely I mean it should not damage the hardware. There might be files open and unsaved that could be lost. Please give your Surface machine some time just in case it can make an Auto-save of your unsaved work. If you already waited then continue.

Press the on-off button (top left of your Surface Tablet) briefly. It might need a little longer press, up to three seconds or so.

Let it go if or when you see an image like the lock screen move halfway down the screen.

The lock screen coming down to half-way down the screen can be a sign you can easily fix your Microsoft Surface black screen of death issue. Its really not dead!

This might not happen, but if it does, you are in luck.

It will have written something like “slide down to power off”. I have used this several times with success.

You have three options:

Slide back up and let the Surface run longer. An advantage is this could help give time for more auto-save actions to be completed.

Close the cover. Your Surface or Surface Pro with black screen but still working might be able to be put into sleep mode. This can stop the problem software loop and allow you to recover from sleep mode after a couple of minutes.

Slide down the image and your Surface will try to shut down.

The success rate at this point is high.

I have had success doing this more than once. Not sure if I did something subtly different or whether just repeating made some difference somehow. That suggests you could give it a try a few times.

Okay if all the above doesn’t help we can go a little harder…

Hard Stop of Surface with blank screen

The next option to try is a hard stop, or forced stop.

Hold down the on-off button for a long time (relative to above). Hold it down for up to 30 seconds.

The Surface may stop or it may reset.

Typical observed initial response is for the screen to flash or flicker briefly. (That is a good sign of life not ‘death‘!)

The last option – Forced reset of Surface with Black Screen.

Again, it might be an advantage to wait a little (if you haven’t already) just to give any Auto-save routines still running the chance to automatically save your work files so you can recover them later.

Hold down the volume up button and the on-off power button for up to 30 seconds.

Let it go sooner if you see signs of response.

Once stopped and shutdown, make sure you have power connected and give it a few minutes to ensure you have the bare minimum charge.

Note: the Surface Pro with very low battery will not start even though you have the power connected. It needs a certain minimum charge first.

I suggest give it 5 minutes or so. That might not be required if it has already been connected a while. If nothing starts a good half an hour on the charger before you try again could ensure it restarts okay.

Make sure your Surface charger light is on to indicate it is actually charging. If not, again I direct you to that other article referenced above.

There you go. That is how you fix a Surface Pro with black screen.

Is your problem still there?

Did we fix your problem Surface Pro 4 black screen won’t turn on? (or any model of Surface Pro-won’t turn on black screen.) Does the Surface Screen remain black? Please let us know in the comments below if we helped or more about your problem so we can investigate further.

Surface Pro Black Screen (of Death?) – Summary

We have shown several ways to fix a Surface Pro with Black screen of death, starting from simple to more serious. People love to say black screen of death but that sounds too serious for my liking. If it won’t start at all, I gave a link to another TheTechMentor.com article that gives five or so fixes for that. The fixes above can work for a Surface Pro 4, Surface Pro 3, RT or other Surface model with a black screen, even for cases of otherwise black screen with cursor visible or the Surface Pro keyboard lights up.

How to turn off a Surface Pro even if frozen and won’t turn off normally!

When your Microsoft Surface won’t turn off, here is what you need to do (and of course, we cover how to turn it off normally as well). Causes relate to software not responding or even blocking the shutdown sequence, you have (perhaps inadvertently) loaded up the memory and your frozen Surface Pro needs time to unload this memory burden before turning off, or process threads are running in the background and won’t let it turn off or reset.

We cover the basics on how to turn off a surface pro normally and what to do if your Surface won’t turn off. Read on and follow the steps!

Introduction to how to turn off Surface Pro Normally AND if it Won’t Turn Off at all!

I started looking into this when my wide said across the desk, “my surface pro won’t turn off”. That was just the fan and I was able to help her easily. Having said this, on other occasions my Surface Pro has frozen and would not turn it off with the power button. There can be other similar sounding issues and one of the solutions below will help with those too.

This was the prompt I needed because I had also been meaning to write a little guide about how to turn off a Surface Pro normally.

That was because in the workplace I found that raw beginners also were looking for a suitable way to turn off their Surface Pro. Some were confused whether it was in sleep mode or turned off. If that is you don’t worry, I will cover this first.

If not feel free to skip further down this page.

Normal Shutdown or Power off options

First, make sure your files are saved and programs are shutdown.

Make sure there is no Windows update going on (normally there will be signs of this if you have been using your tablet-PC).

Many background backup facilities are on by default but you should not rely on auto save and auto recover for any of your needed files.

While you close your files and other apps, be aware to look to see if there is anything strange like an internet browser taking a very long time to respond (some websites use a lot of your PCs memory and power and it doesn’t go well if you have 30 tabs of these open!).

This can be a cause to look out for when your Surface Pro won’t turn off.

Try using the Windows logo to shutdown normally first.

Step 1: Click the windows icon

This is bottom left of screen in Windows 10 for the standard setup.

Alternatively press the <Windows> key and <x> key at the same time to bring up the ‘WinX’ menu. A third alternative is to press <Alt> and <F4> keys at the same time.

In Windows 8 there is a keyboard shortcut; Press the <Windows> key and <i> key at the same time.

Click the power button and then choose the shut down option

Step 2: Tap or click the power button (see image further below)

If you used the keyboard shortcut to display the ‘WinX’ menu, tap or click “Shut down or Sign out”.

You will see the options (including Sleep and Restart).

Step 3: Click “Shut down”. This closes all the apps and turns off the Surface Pro.

See if your Surface Pro won’t shutdown using the normal method first. You can select Sleep or Restart. Only Restart completely turns off your Surface Pro.

Put Surface Pro to Sleep Mode:

Alternatively, to put your Surface into sleep mode, naturally you want to select ‘Sleep’ instead of shutdown.

You can also shutdown to sleep mode simply by closing your Type Cover if you have one connected.

This is often when people proclaim their “Surface Pro won’t turn off”!

Note: Sometimes when you close your Surface Type Cover, the sleep mode will take time to activate as it prepares for hibernation, which can make you think it won’t turn off.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, watch out for those awkward moments when your surface pro plays music when you expect it to be off or in sleep mode!

Often that music will come from a website tab like You Tube. This can happen minutes after you closed the cover and expected it to be turned off!

Also, expect your Surface Pro to take time for the fan to stop.

Surface Pro Fan won’t turn off

It can be quite noisy and sometimes the fan on your Microsoft Surface won’t turn off for some time to cool the internals down (TheTechMentor.com has written about over heating problems before).

When the fan on your Surface Pro 4 won’t turn off at night, don’t resort to earplugs to sleep – use this fix instead! It works when a Surface Pro 3 won’t turn off too!

Not nice when you have just finished surfing the internet or watched a movie and it is time to sleep! At night when you want to sleep that fan can sound very loud!

After a moment, you can stop the Surface Pro fan much faster by doing the following:

Step 1: Re-open the Surface Type Cover and follow step 2.

Step 2: after only 1 or 2 seconds, re-close the Surface Type Cover again.

In a moment, the fan will turn off.

This problem relates to fan cycling times and the temperature of the Surface Pro. Below a certain temperature, it no longer requires the fan to run.

Re-opening and closing again makes it check if the Surface Pro is cool enough to turn off the fan faster than the general run-time programmed for the fan.

Okay, so we’ve saved you some sleep! Perhaps. Now onto the major issue.

Surface Pro Won’t Turn off or Shut Down properly

As stated above the identified causes are:

Surface Pro Won’t turn off due to software not responding

Surface Pro looks like it won’t turn off because the memory is loaded up (and needs to unwind first)

Process threads in the background won’t let your Surface turn off.

The Symptoms

Symptoms include your Surface going into sleep mode with the fan still running and music starting to play when you think the Surface Pro is off, and of course not turning off when you tell it to!

Shutdown Surface Pro frozen & won’t turn off with locked memory or other overload

Before you try any forced shutdown method, make very sure you give plenty of time for any possible Windows update to have completed. Sometimes it is not possible to see an update is working through the process, so just give it some time first.

This is important because forcing a restart during a Windows update can damage your Windows installation and render a difficult challenge to recover your Surface Pro.

Go into task manager (see steps below) and view the Processes that are running. Perhaps more important that which ones they are, you want to see what the percentage use of CPU, Memory and Disk usage are.

See below for an example of Processes running ‘so hard’ that this Microsoft Surface won’t turn off, so you know what to look for.

This frozen Surface Pro won’t turn off due to locked up processes!

In this machine, it seemed there were no apps operating, as nothing was actually being used at the time. The entire Surface Pro 4 was frozen and wouldn’t turn off when the user tried the power button.

However, the reality was that the apps had tied up all practical operation (in this case the internet browser was to blame). This Surface Pro would not turn off due to the severe memory (RAM), disk and CPU blockage.

No doubt, some processes had gone into something like a traffic jam! Doesn’t matter how it happened – if you see this and cannot shut down the apps, you have little choice but to do a hard or forced shutdown. (See below)

Force Processes to Shutdown Using Task Manager

First, force shutdown of the apps using most of the memory:

Step 1: start Task Manager

This will likely be very slow to start as very little processing is available, but you need it in order to proceed.

Note: I suggest you do not use Cortana or the Microsoft Windows search, as these will require more processing to start the Task Manager.

The best way is to use Control-Alt-Delete; hold down the <Shift> key, they <Alt> key and then while holding them, also press the <Delete> key.

With a system all blocked up your Surface Pro may take a long time to respond so to be sure make sure you press these buttons clearly and deliberately.

Step 2: Wait for the Options to appear.

As I wrote above, your Surface has a blockage in the processors and memory so any activity including starting task manager can take a long time.

Step 3: Move selector down to Task Manager and select it.

Press the down arrow on the keyboard 3 times to select Task Manager, (or just tap/click directly on Task Manager).

Step 4: Observe the Processes and how much out of 100% the Memory and other functions are used.

If they are very high (anything over 80%) your system will slow noticeably. A slow Surface Pro is a good reason why you decided to restart or shut it down in the first place. So if you find this type of problem you are well on the way to fixing it!

Step 5: Sort by RAM (Memory usage) and select the app using the most memory.

Click or tap on the ‘Memory’ heading to sort from the highest RAM user to the lowest.

This little arrow indicates the memory using apps are sorted in descending order, with the highest user at the top. (Yes this is from the same Surface Pro frozen won’t turn off above.)

If you have done this before it will remain your view the next time you use Task Manager.

Select the item in the top row (by clicking or tapping on it).

Alternatively you can just type the <down> arrow key.

Step 6: Stop the worst memory draining app.

With the top row selected, click ‘End Task’. This button is down to the bottom right of the task manager window.

Note: you may have to scroll down or to the right to see it.

Now wait again for Windows Task Manager to force the task to clear from the Memory and CPU and other processes. This can also take longer than expected.

If you want, you can monitor the percent usage at the top. Ideally, these would decline to less than 80%.

Alternatively, you can click or tap on the ‘Performance’ tab and observe the trend of these processes as they decline.

The image below shows the Surface Pro frozen memory trend and it’s recovery (decrease in memory usage) after the above steps.

Frozen memory blockage released. If you have now solved the ‘Surface Pro frozen won’t turn off’ problem, you should now be able to use and shutdown your Surface Pro.

If you have stopped the cause of the problem, after a minute or two your Surface Pro may regain something akin to normal operation. It is still a good idea to close down other apps and restart. The good thing is this way you might regain performance enough to save files in the other apps before you do any further forced shutdown.

You may repeat steps 5 and 6 to shutdown more apps if the problem continues.

Forced Shutdown of the entire frozen Surface Pro that Won’t Turn Off

Step 1: Use the power button

Press and hold down the power button for a count of 30 seconds or so until the screen goes blank. The power button (on/off switch) is at the top left of your Surface Pro when facing the screen.

Step 2: Observe if your Surface Pro can turn off

As you hold down the power button, observe for your tablet to turn off.

Sometimes to press and hold for a count of only 3 seconds or more until the screen goes blank will work. That is to say it will shut down sooner than the 30 seconds stated above.

This alone may help when your Surface will not shutdown at first.

Further shutdown and Reset

After your Surface turns off, you may want to continue with the following two-button reset method to reset and clear all issues.

Step 1: Use the forced shutdown

Make sure you have tried the preceding Step 1 from above using the power button.

Step 2: Press the two buttons for reset

Press and hold volume-up button and the power button at the same time, for at least 15 seconds.

Note: The screen may flash the Surface logo before 15 seconds as part of the reset, but it is best to continue to hold down the buttons for the full 15 seconds.

Step 3: Wait a little more

(Yes I know, lots of waiting!)

After you release the buttons, wait for 10 seconds.

This should allow the reset process to complete in the background (even if it looks like your Surface Pro has turned off).

Step 4: Check function of your Surface Pro

Even though you might be satisfied at this point that your Surface Pro is off and reset, it is a good idea to check it has all worked successfully. Press (and release as per normal) the power button. Your Surface will turn on again.

Step 5: Let your PC fully restart

Give your Surface Pro plenty of time to go through all its start-up processes and let it sit for a few minutes. Now everything should be reset, any memory issues cleared, and your Surface pro should turn off as per normal.

Other fixes

There is another thing you can try. Other methods may exist but the ones I have found online are not suitable for the Surface Pro.

Let the battery Drain Down

Normally it is not a good idea to let the battery drain down completely. However if there is no other practical alternative, then your Surface Pro that won’t shutdown will eventually run out of power and stop.

This will clear any locked keyboard and power button issues due to rogue processes.

Step 1: disconnect the power supply and charger.

Step 2: let your machine operate until the battery goes flat.

In my opinion, it is okay to try again a normal shutdown during this process, as there is no harm done and perhaps you will avoid running to complete battery-drained status.

Step 3: Wait. Again (sorry – nobody said it is fun when your Microsoft Surface won’t turn off!).

This will take several hours potentially. I know this is not ideal if your Surface Pro froze and it won’t restart to allow you get back to work.

However if the forced shutdown methods above are not working, then this is the next best option in terms of recovering your laptop back to working condition.

Step 4: Press the power button and give your machine say 30 minutes to start.

Should I be Concerned When My Surface Won’t Turn Off?

The way some apps and websites use the computational power and other resources available in your PC, windows can’t always maintain spare processing power.

There are many processes running to do all sorts of things, including those routines called into action by Windows when you want to turn off your Surface Pro.

As there is no true power switch, all shutdown processes are software driven. You do not see these. They normally run quickly in the background.

Naturally, if your software can’t operate the necessary processes because they are frozen, your Surface Pro can’t shut down.

So overall you should not worry when your frozen Surface won’t turn off because this overload can happen unrelated to your tablet’s hardware. One clarification: the processor in the hardware can make a difference but it only to do with the capacity of the processor. I am not suggesting there is a hardware problem to be fixed.

All Surface Pro devices use Intel processors, the Core i3 Core i5 and Core i7 models.

Core i3 and i5 Surface Pro devices are more likely to suffer this problem than a Surface Pro with an Intel Core i7 (or higher) installed, as they have more ‘headroom’ (or spare capacity) in the processor.

Okay, that is how to turn off a Surface Pro even if it won’t shutdown normally.

Related Article: The opposite problem is when your Surface won’t turn on or start.

Summary: What to do with a Surface Pro that Won’t Turn Off

There are several actions to take when your Surface Pro won’t turn off or restart. Often it can freeze up because one app has blocked the memory, CPU, or disk access. Core i3 and i5 Surface Pro devices are more likely to suffer this than Surface Pro with an Intel core i7 installed, as the core i7s have more ‘headroom’ (or spare capacity) in the processor. We also covered how to turn of your Surface Pro normally.

Introduction to Updating your Surface Pro Docking Station

You may know more recent models have superseded the Surface Pro 3. That is not bad; it just means you cannot buy them new anymore.

Do not worry though, because you can still buy Surface Pro 3 accessories, including the dock.

Alternatively, you might have a Surface Pro 4 and like the Surface Pro 3 dock enough to use with it, or already have one.

You might own a Surface Pro 3 and want to get the docking station for it. This article will help you buy the right one.

Microsoft Docks

Note: You can consider two Microsoft branded options:

The Surface Pro 3 Docking Station, which was released the same time as the Surface Pro 3.
YES! You CAN still buy them.

The New Surface Pro docking station, which does not have the stand. It has other excellent features and is the upgraded version.

Thankfully Microsoft have made the newer dock compatible with the Surface Pro 3 and the Surface Pro 4.

Speaking of compatibility, you might want to connect ‘the other way’. By this I mean you can connect a Surface Pro 4 to a Surface Pro 3 docking station, almost.

That is, you can connect a Surface Pro 4 to the older style dock (i.e. with the frame) provided you have an adapter. More on this below.

You can then take advantage of all the ports to connect your Surface Pro to your peripherals.

Now, as I said above, some people are searching to update their Dock firmware (can solve certain docking station issues, like not supplying power or your Surface Pro not charging).

Here’s the Surface Pro docking station update step-by-step:

Update Surface Pro Docking Station Firmware

Updating the firmware for an existing dock may help solve a number of previously identified problems.

Note this will only work and update Microsoft Surface Dock models. If you have another dock (see further below for non-Microsoft brands) then this won’t work for you. Try the manufacturer of that device.

The Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 docking station update work exactly the same. The Microsoft Surface Dock Updater support also works with Surface 5 and 6.

Step 1 Check for Windows updates

Normally this is automatic these days, but if you need to manually update an older version of Windows see here, or if you have Windows 10 that hasn’t updated, see this article on how to do it.

Step 2 First navigate to the updater software

Use the link further below to get the MS Surface Pro Dock updating software (firmware to be precise).

Microsoft Doc Updater is here:

Download the MS Dock Updater.

Step 3 Download the firmware updater

Just click the link in the Microsoft page at the link above.

Step 4 Install the downloaded Surface Pro Dock Updater.

Yep, you guessed it, just install it (click to install).

Step 5 Start the Updater

When you click start, the first thing it does is check your current version of firmware.

If it says something like “You have the latest firmware fr this surface dock.” You’re in luck. Or then again, you may be trying to solve a problem, and this is not the cause, so that isn’t so good.

See elsewhere in this article for links to buy a replacement.

The second of the two likely comments can be “This Surface Dock is not running the latest firmware”.

Step 6 Update the Firmware for you Surface Dock

Click ‘Update’.

This will take a moment and shows you a progress bar so you know that the dock update is actually happening.

Please do not disconnect the Surface Dock during this time, or you could turn it into a nice, non-function stand (if Surface Pro 3) or a rather silly paper weight (for the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pro 2017 or more recent version).

Step 7 Reset the MS Dock Chipset

To actually update the Surface Dock chipset with the new firmware you have to disconnect the dock.

NOTE: Maintain power supply to the dock during this time.

After a moment you will then be prompted to reconnect the Surface Dock.

Step 8 Also update Display Port

This will happen once you again disconnect the Surface Pro dock.

Again, a progress bar is shown and this will typically take up to three minutes.

Surface Dock updater stuck or other problem

Finally, there is an event log to let you discover the nature of any failure to work through the Surface Dock update.

So you will find that works for some of you. If it doesn’t, I’m afraid you may be better off to buy a replacement (see the links above and below for recommended options and their features).

Okay, now back onto getting a replacement dock and the supporting information to select which dock to buy.

Specifications – Surface Pro 3 Docking Station Ports:

2x USB 3.0 ports.

2x USB 2.0 ports.

1x MiniDisplay Port.

Audio out jack port.

Ethernet cable Port. (Suitable with Cat5 and Cat5e RJ45 Ethernet cable connection to your router.)

In addition, of course in contains the side pin connector, which plugs into the side of your Surface Pro 3 when you push together the sides of the dock.

I think the Stand arrangement of this dock is effective and provides a very solid stand.

Surface Pro 3 Dock issues

Based on my experiences. As you may know, it does enclose the lower back half of your Surface.

This means that when you go to insert it into the (older) dock you must close the back first. Not necessarily a deal breaker! It has been a little fiddly at times, and means it is never a one-handed exercise.

My Surface Pro 3 docking station in action on TheTechMentor.com.

You may understand that the back of the stand also provides more material around the back of the Surface Pro 3, particularly compared to when the kickstand is open.

Thus, you might find it operates a little warmer than when you do not have it docked.

This has been an issue for me when I wanted to use the device to its maximum performance. (See the overheating troubleshooting section below.)

The other thing with the Surface Pro 3 docking station back is that it prevents you from having the kickstand of the Surface Pro open.

Note: This means you cannot insert remove or change the micro SD card in the back. This is because the Surface Pro 3 micro SD card slot is at the back under the kickstand.

If you don’t intend to use a microSD card, or you won’t insert or remove it from the slot very often, then this is not a deal breaker.

TIP: Rather than straining your neck to see if the power is turned on and reaching your device, you can hold your finger just above the right hand side of the dock and look for the LED light reflected off your skin.

Similarly to the question above, you might ask “What are the Surface Pro docking station ports?” If you want to know about the New Surface Pro Docking Station, whose specs are below.

Specifications – New Surface Dock

There are a few upgraded ports or additional ports. Let’s take a look.

The New Surface Pro docking station ports:

4x USB 3.0 ports.

2x Mini Display Ports.

1x Audio out port.

1x Gigabit Ethernet Port.

Instead of a frame and stand there is only the magnetic Surface connector plug at the end of a lightweight cable, which connects your surface Pro just like the charger cable. The remainder of the ports are installed in the larger bodied Surface charger-like box.

New Surface Dock Issues

Naturally if you get this dock, you need to use the stand of your Surface Pro 3 to prop it up.

There is no back stand unlike the Surface Pro 3 Dock, so there will not be any overheating issues due to that.

Your Surface Pro should have already come with a charger, which in all cases have an additional USB connection. The New Surface Dock is somewhat like another charger, but larger with all the additional ports. So you now have a little more information to compare the two types of Surface dock before you select the one you want to buy.

Connect Surface Pro 4 to Surface Pro 3 Dock

You might require this if you already have a Surface Pro 3 dock (i.e. the frame stand). As I wrote above, you need an adapter. Wait! Before you groan, the adapter is free.

This way, you can dock to instantly connect your Surface Pro 4 to your monitor, network via cable, speakers, whatever keyboard you may have, plus printer if you have one etc.

Surface Pro 4 has three docking station options: There are (practically) free, if not difficult for some to get.

These are the docking station adapter options:

You can ask for a dock adapter at your nearest Microsoft Store, (‘Surface Pro 4 adapter for Surface Pro 3 docking station‘).

If not, you can go to Device service and repair and select ‘Replace an accessory’ to order one.

Also, to get one quick you might be able to make one! (See below.)

Yes Microsoft have a downloadable set of instructions to 3D print your own. Wow! Talk about outsourcing!

If you have a 3D printer you can download it (surface pro 4 adapter for surface pro 3 docking station) here. No waiting nor going to the shops! Nice. Be sure to use the above procedure to perform a Surface Pro docking station update.

The adapter sits on top of the dock so that the Pro 4’s connections are at the correct height and depth position.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you could wedge something in there. This might only be good enough to be a temporary measure. You don’t want to damage the connectors.

NOTE: Not all the Surface Pro models can connect to all docks.

Unfortunately, in the past some people have bought the wrong docking station so we will cover that next.

Non Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Dock Options

The following dock is specially designed for Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 but isn’t a branded Microsoft dock. [Sorry, only MS branded docks available now that are specifically for the Surface Pro, link below goes to one of those. -Ed.]

As far as I can see, all the ports are relatively close together on the back of this dock, so you might not be able to connect all your peripheral accessories at once depending on their shape.

Surface Pro 3 docking station vs Surface 3 dock

Here is the Surface 3 dock.

Note: It is important to get the correct docking station. I would like to clarify the difference between the Surface Pro 3 Dock as opposed to the Surface 3 Dock.

This is important because if you get the wrong one, the side connector arrangement is different (there are two) and does not line up to the correct Surface Pro 3 port.

This Surface 3 docking station is not compatible with the Surface PRO 3. Only click if you have a Surface 3. IF you do need this model you can get a big discount!

It will not be compatible due to the changed connections on the Surface Pro 3 relative to the Surface 3. Hence, you do not want to get the wrong one.

If you already have your Dock and need to troubleshoot problems, we cover that next.

Troubleshooting Overheating issues

I already mentioned overheating. If that is your issue, read on.

Note: If your Surface 3 is slowing down significantly, it might be caused by overheating.

Other known problems are failing to exit flight mode to connect to Wi-Fi. We have another article on how to fix windows stuck in airplane mode here.

The first action to take is to review what you have running.

Sure, having 30 applications open and running can consume a lot of power and that power consumption generates more heat.

However, some things can use up power when you are not expecting it. To check performance, go to the task manager.

Task manager access:

One way to access task manager is to press the following three keys at once: <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Del>. Obviously this requires a keyboard!

In tablet mode you can swipe down from the top right hand side of the screen in Windows 8.1.

In Windows 10 you can tap and type in the search bar or tap on the microphone next to the search bar, and search for task manager. Cortana will open it for you.

In task manager you can see what is consuming CPU and memory, among other things.

In Windows 10 tap or click bottom left to show more or fewer details.

Next steps

To troubleshoot you need more details. Look at CPU column and Memory column in turn.

Sort from maximum to minimum by clicking at the top of the table.

Look at the biggest CPU power consumers and memory users of the top few item at the top left hand side of the task manager. Check and confirm if you are really using those apps a significant amount.

Don’t worry too much about things you don’t recognize.

Often the issue will be something like your internet browser is stuck in some loop and you need to close some or all of the tabs. You might even need to restart. Make sure you save all your work first!

Other Options

Unfortunately the dock was not designed with an additional cooling fan system or something like that, not even as an additional accessory. Now that would have been cool!

The only other options are un-dock Surface Pro 3 (or 4) and possibly cool with your own separate fan.

Summary of Surface Pro 3 Docking Station Update

In case you need it, experience has shown while not perfect, it is still one of the most useful and effective accessories for turning your 2-in-1 Surface Pro 3 (and possibly a Surface Pro 4) into a desktop computer. You are now aware of the connectivity options, concerns and alternatives for the Surface Pro 3 Docking station and the Surface Dock for more recent models. These give several options for alternatives in case the update doesn’t work for you. Shown too is how to perform your Surface Pro docking station update whether you have the Pro 3 or Pro 4 or new Surface.

Do this when your Microsoft Surface won’t turn on

When your Surface won’t turn on, it is likely to be power problems or cable connection problems. From dead batteries, to battery symbols, to charger problems, to cable connection faults and more, the fixes below are all quick things you can do. It’s happened several times that my wife’s or my Surface won’t turn on, and clients’ too.

I know from experience that when it first happens the feeling one has is FEAR! Fear that something is seriously wrong.

I have found several fixes this so that doesn’t need to be the reaction.

This is a long article so I have a quick action just below if you can’t wait!

Use the in-page jumps below to go straight to what you need.

Quick action:

I recommend you do read and follow relevant instructions further below for detailed descriptions of the different possible actions with important notes and tips. But if you want quick action when nothing else seems to work, do this:

Recharge for a good thirty minutes (and up to 12 hours if your surface battery is very old).

Try the normal power button first. No need for further action if that works. If not, continue.

Hold <volume up> button and <power> button for 15 seconds.

Make no change to any settings if prompted and save to exit.

Contents

> Jump to the first fix for when your Surface Pro won’t turn on. Don’t skip this for other Surface devices, as it can fix a common problem.

By the way, if you have the opposite problem, then use the link a little further below.
Introduction

Yes it’s happened to me that my Surface Pro won’t turn on, but I know what to do, I have helped clients, and I can help you too.

I have several tips that others won’t think about unless they have genuine experience with this issue.

I am sure of a high success rate because it has happened to me once and to my wife’s Surface Pro on for I’d say more than three separate occasions. So we’ve encountered it quite a few times.

Note: If your problem is that your Surface is frozen and won’t shutdown click here for that fix.

Due to the nature of the problem and some research, plus through personal experience I can say for 90% or more of the time there is a straight forward cause.

The first solution below should fix it.

Keep reading further below if the first method doesn’t work for you.

Windows 11

Please leave a comment if anyone has difficulties with this in Windows 11.

I am pretty sure it could work based on the changes I am aware of. However, I have not personally tested it.

If no methods work here there are a further two options

They are not quick, but they can also work.

Finally, if none of the fixes below work. Still do not give up.

There is some advice for your local computer repair technician right near the end of this article.

These relate to blown fuses and diodes.

Symptoms of this problem

Yes it is a worry when it still looks like this after pressing the power button.

You press the start button (and after waiting you try again) but it looks like it won’t start because you see/hear:

A Blank Screen (the Surface screen not turning on)

No sound from within or other sign of life when you press the power button in the normal way

The light comes on when you attach the power supply but your Surface won’t turn on immediately after

Your device does not seem to use power

black screen no power to mouse or keyboard

The last one means it is less likely the device has been caught in some kind of memory or CPU loop due to software like with too many tabs or a problematic tab in an internet browser.

The quick fix procedure below can work for the following cases of Microsoft Surface not turning on:

Surface Pro 3 not turning on

Surface Pro 4 not turning on

More recent Surface Pro 6, 7, 8 and X wont turn on

and, Surface Book will not turn on

We are not excluding other Surface models with the same problem – this can work for them

Some aspects may also be relevant if you have a Surface Laptop or Surface studio. but my experience is mainly based on when my wife’s or my Surface Pro won’t turn on, clients who have the same model, and then further research from there.

Quick fix 1 for when Your Surface Pro won’t turn on

In addition to following the steps below, I have a refinement to make for this year.

2020 Update:

One client’s Surface pro’s battery was getting so flat, that they had to fully recharge the battery prior to restart.

This meant that the long push on the start button (see below) would not work until her Surface Pro had been plugged into her docking station and charged for 2 whole hours!

I tried several times before that; after 5 minutes; after 10 minutes and neither worked.

She told me her battery no longer gives a warning that it is low. It just shows about 7 % battery or less, then shuts down.

After she left it overnight (not on the charger) it would not start at all.

Do this first

You might not believe me. My wife did not believe me either. I understand why. Of course you will not believe it if you are certain your Surface Pro should be charged.

However this works ninety percent of the time! (See why it works further below.)

I assure you the first thing to do is ASSUME the battery is too flat to start!

Note: This is also the problem to assume when

your NEW Surface won’t start, or

shows the battery symbol.

More charging is required!

When you are ready to say “no way!” stop there if you can, and continue…

If your Surface Pro 3 or 4 (or other Surface Model including the new Surface Go) is not plugged in, then plug it in. Use the original Microsoft charger and cables only, if you can.

Check everything in the connections to and from the power supply.

Make sure the power supply charging light is ON (at the end of the Surface charger cable or docking station).

If the light is not on then:

Check all connections again.

Then try wiggling the cable connections at each point.

As I explain further down the page (but useful and relevant here) I had a cable that had an intermittent loose connection or broken wire within the cable near the power supply adjacent the connector.

TIP: I’ll cover this again in more detail in quick fix 3. Your power supply additionally has a USB charging connection. You can use this to help do this test:

You should attach another device (such as a phone) that beeps when you turn on the power. This other device creates an audible signal when you remake the power.

If you hear multiple beeps when you wiggle the cable at a point, then you know you have an intermittent connection.

This saves you some difficulty while bending down and wiggling cables. The advantage is you do not have to contort yourself to see the light at the Surface Pro not turning on at all (or only turning on momentarily). This will help provided the cable problem is closer to the power supply than the USB in the Surface Pro charger.

Leave your Surface Pro plugged in and charging for at least 5 minutes minimum. Preferably 20 minutes or more.

How long is long enough?

Update for 2020: as stated above, you might need to recharge for two hours!

I read online someone suggested charging it to at least 40%.

However how do you know when it is charged to at least 40% when you can’t turn it on?! Nonetheless the idea is clear. You want to make sure it is well past a very low charged state.

Okay do it and come back when you have done that (this page will still be here).

Note: you might see a battery icon come up on the screen – that is a good sign! Do not worry if it does not though.

Now press the start button again to restart your Surface Pro.

If it works, you have done it and you can share this fix to your friends and colleagues with a Surface Pro!

If not then read on further below for other fixes.

Why it Works and Why your Surface Won’t Turn On

You can easily see when a Surface Pro is running low on battery power.

Look to the bottom right of screen (on the task bar).

At low charge, the icon looks like this (circled):

It is easy when you are using your machine, that is. To get this low while using your Surface, you will have seen a warning like the following.

So with these great indications thanks to Microsoft, you would think you have a good idea about when the battery will be running low well before it runs out of charge, am I right? WRONG!

Well, not that wrong most of the time. However the problem cause as described below could catch you out.

What you might not realize:

New owners of a Surface Pro 3 or Surface Pro 4 do not realize that when in sleep mode, your Surface continues to use WiFi and connect to the internet.

This allows it to perform various functions like downloading updates from Microsoft that Windows will install later when your Surface is running.

[Editor’s note: I am not sure this is still the case. It depends on your operating system.

We will cover other causes of continued battery usage in another article.]

Sleep mode is generally a very low power mode. However if your Surface Pro is still using a lot of power in sleep mode it can totally drain the battery.

There are times when the Surface Pro battery can go flat while the user is not watching the screen.

We think at first, since we have not touched it and last time we looked when there was still plenty of power indicated.

Naturally we are surprised and think ‘my Surface won’t turn on’ when the start button is pressed.

However, your Surface won’t turn on when the battery is dead. It can’t!

Be wary of your charger and cables

Some people end up with non-Micosoft charger and/or cables.

Be aware that there can be instances where these cause problems for your battery to charge properly.

In this case, if you were using your Surface, you might observe it draining the battery even if plugged in.

Best thing you can do is turn and refit the cables, and check you have the right Microsoft charger for your particular Surface.

Quick Fix 2 – Speaking of Turning and Refitting cables!

If there is a charger problem, something that will address certain Surface Pro Charger problems is to reset the charger.

One option is to reset the charger.

Unplug the charger at the wall or power strip and flip it to the exact opposite position (turn it 180 degrees) then re-connect it (so that the pins are in the opposite place).

I don’t know exactly why this can work (I could make an educated guess) but the fact it that it does work for some battery charger issues and is super-quick!

Alternatively if the above is not convenient, try flipping the power cable at the transformer block.

If your battery charger problem is locked up somehow there is no way to tell except if you do this and it starts to work again!

Notes and Tips:

Note: You might think that your surface pro should start the instant that you connect the power, even if the battery is flat. This is not the case. I believe there is a prioritized hierarchy and there must be a minimum battery charge before anything else will function.

TIP: Leave the surface charger connected for a few minutes before you make a judgement that your Surface has sufficient battery to start.

Another thing to look out for as a cause when your Surface Pro won’t turn on is the battery charger cable itself.

Okay, now onto some other solutions in case your Surface won’t turn on still.

Quick Fix 3 – For When Your Surface Pro won’t turn on

If your Surface won’t turn on still, the next common issue is cable connection problems. Both internal and external wiring connections exist.

I’ll explain what to do for both.

My Surface Pro battery charger cable developed an intermittent bad connection, as i already mentioned in the first supporting information for the first quick fix above.

This meant I had expected it to be charging when it was just wearing down the battery.

You might identify this type of problem when above when you check the battery charging indicator light (see the photo above).

How ever if the problem is intermittent the problem is difficult to see if the connection is working at the moment you check the charging light.

You need to wiggle the cable all the connecting points and perhaps even in the main cable part, and look to see if the charger light goes off at any time.

I admit it can be difficult to strain your neck to see the light while wiggling the cable joins, especially if down under a desk or over at the wall.

Again, use this trick:

I have is a great trick to help solve this this problem.

The nice thing about it is that is makes finding an intermittent connection problem quicker!

It is difficult to wiggle the cable (to find the loose wire) and watch the charging indicator light at your Surface Pro at the same time. Most Microsoft Surface Pro chargers have a USB connection in the transformer box in the charger.

Plug in your smartphone or any USB device that can beep when the power is connected. For example, my iPhone beeps (when not in silent mode) when it starts charging.

Now as you wiggle the cable at different points all you have to do is listen for a beep.

Unfortunately it only works up to the point your USB device is connected, but from there it is a shorter distance to your Surface Pro and easier to see.

Money Saving Tip

TIP to save money: If your cable is damaged on the supply side there is some good news. This part of your charger cable is just a version of a ‘kettle plug’. Doesn’t matter what you call it – the good thing is they are standard and used by many devices and so are very common. You can simply buy a replacement cable without the need to buy a whole new charger!

If your Surface won’t turn on still, hang in there. There are more quick fixes to try below.

Now the following fixes may (I admit) be somewhat dubious. That is why at this point if the useful top three fixes and useful tips above haven’t worked, I’d recommend going back to the quick fix action presented at the very top and trying that first.

Surface Pro Won’t Turn On Quick Fix Number 4

Are you kidding me?! You tried all these things and it still won’t turn on?

If this is you, please don’t worry, there is the (potential) internal wiring connection problem to fix.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I use my Surface Pro all the time and it is great! However it is a thin tablet that only the manufacturer can open. In general use it seems some people have the misfortune that internal parts and connections come loose.

Well, yes you can’t open it (under warranty anyhow) but there are a couple of things to do that have helped some people who have internal connection cable problems.

Surface Pro Won’t Start CPR Method

Scoff, go on!

This is the view from your Surface Pro that won’t start when you summon the courage to try the CPR method!

But it does work in some cases!

Take off any cover you might have over your surface pro.

Face it screen down on a sturdy flat surface. You might want to remove the Type Cover for this and make sure the screen is well supported and not going to get scratched.

Press lightly on the back in the center off the surface. Be gentle!

Caution: There is potential to damage your device if you give it too much physical force!

If you do it too lightly at first no problem, you can press a little harder as a second attempt.

What you are aiming to do is give little pumps as if you are giving CPR.

As indicated above try it if you dare and more gently at first.

See if your Surface will turn on.

If not try again a little more like you have a little patient on the operating table!

Why it Works: People say this works, so my guess is there are internal cable connections that can come loose and are oriented in such a way as to be pushed together better when given a few little pushes in the middle.

I’ve seen someone suggest 15 pushes, but that sounds more like real CPR before a breath!

You can do this on further occasions if in the future your Surface won’t turn on again.

Before you go onto the next Fix, I recommend you go right back to the quick fix first presented above. Rather that than the one below, for which I provide warnings!

Fix 5 Surface Pro Won’t Start Temperature Cycle Method

This also aims to address poor internal connections.

Caution: I know that it has worked for some people but I caution you to use this method as a last resort, as there is greater potential to do some damage with this one.

Some intermittent connection problems can be managed (if not permanently fixed as one guy reported) with a temperature cycle.

Things expand when they get warm and contract when they cool. Plastic and different metals expand and contract at slightly different rates. A slight connection problem that means your Surface won’t turn on might be helped with cycling the temperature.

What do I mean by cycling the temperature?

I assume your table it already at room temperature. This is normal and our starting point.

To do a temperature cycle you take it up to a higher temperature for a little while (say a few minutes for it to even out inside) and then let it cool back down to room temperature.

Alternatively you can reduce the temperature and then bring it back up to room temperature.

Most Surface Pro’s have a problem with high heat generated, especially the Surface Pro 3 when used in the Surface Pro 3 docking station. The dock reduces some cooling relative to being free standing and having the stand open.

So If your Surface Pro 3 won’t start it could be due to the high temperatures it gets to. Unfortunately this might mean a cooling cycle could be more likely to work than a heating cycle, but that is just a guess really.

Even if your Surface Pro 4 won’t start this could be applicable. The Surface Pro 4 dock is not so much a docking station as a simple cable connection and it looks a little like a charger block. However depending on how you use it, the Surface Pro 4 and the New Surface Pro are not immune to similar problems.

Warm, Do not Overheat

Caution: If you heat your Surface Pro too much you could create problems!

You may know that inside a car can heat up much more than the surrounds on a mild or sunny day. This is a nice way to warm up your device without the risk of severely overheating it. Other options include turning up the heat in a small room etc.

I’d prefer you avoid the oven, but if you do, make sure you let it warm up first to drive out any humidity, then cool down enough that you won’t melt any plastic, before you place it inside. No more than about 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celcius)!

As I said above, warming expands so I figure it is more likely to cause items to push into each other than come apart as you might envisage with cooling. However it might also make some connector housings expand and therefore become more loose.

If the above fixes including a heat cycle doesn’t fix loose internal connections and get your Surface Pro to start, then cooling might.

Cold Cycle

Cold cycling is more tricky because as things cool, the air in and around them also cools and moisture in the air can condense onto any cool surface. This might be bad due to shorting out minute electrical components, so is risky.

Dress warmly before you chill down your Surface Pro that won’t start! LOL!

However as a last, last ditch effort and if you have nothing to lose, try cooling the device by putting it in a cool place.

Warning: Make sure you put your device in an airtight bag with desiccant (drying agent or if you don’t have any perhaps try dry rice) for an hour or so before you place it in the cool place.

I’ve read some silly stories about “how my Surface froze” and you definitely do not want to be able to tell one of those stories!

Still can’t turn on Surface Pro 3 or Surface Pro 4?

If your Surface cannot turn on still, make sure you have tried all the suggestions in this article. I can understand you will be worried, but I suggest maybe take a break and then come back so you can think clearly. Then really you can work through all the ideas and things to try as set out above.

When you have rechecked, look for our next related article, which will cover more of the potential things that can go wrong and how to fix them in a longer and more detailed article.

Now onto Surface Book problems of a similar nature.

What to do when your Surface Book will not turn on

If you have a Microsoft Surface Book that won’t turn on, make sure you try all the above. If it still won’t turn on, disconnect and clean all the connectors.

To do this use an eraser or the eraser end of a pencil, then if you have alcohol for cleaning (AKA rubbing alcohol) you can dip a cotton bud and rub it along the pins.

Let it dry (this won’t take long).

Reattach everything and then return to the above steps. If your Surface Book won’t turn on immediately, then give it time to be charged before testing it again.

Nothing works and Your Surface Still won’t turn on?

All is not lost.

You might be able to go to a nearby Microsoft Store.

If not, see the following for the next smart option.

Take your Surface to your Local Computer Tech

If you are not near a Microsoft Store (and many of us aren’t) your local computer repair tech can do something.

A Tech named Bill Salih has done some great work, and now he can guide your tech.

You will note these also address power problems.

He identified these top 3 motherboard problems to check which all stop your Surface Pro from charging and/or starting.
