If you are going to do a Network Tech Course (The Cisco CCNA for example) get yourself a head start by following this guide to get some practice in.

Before you can get started, you need to make sure you have the necessary tools, and decide whether you’re going to use Cat 5e or Cat 6 network cables (the ones with the spline to increase separation distance for performance reasons). Yes, even more recent versions are available, but as these are sufficiently different I’ll leave them out for now.

25ft CAT6 Patch Cable

You are going to make one of these, but you can start off with a long CAT6 cable and make several smaller ones for practice following the RJ-45 Pinout diagrams above. They will come in handy later too. I always carry a patch cable in my toolkit for obvious reasons, so it is a good idea to get a long one anyway.

The longer the better especially when trying to plug in to a wall port or switch that fortune has it way of in the distance. Or you can cut and practice more wiring and crimping.

If you want you can just get a cheap ‘Amazon Basics’ cable:

Buy Cable in Bulk = Cheap RJ45 Cable!

You might be ready to buy in bulk to save. To do this you want to look for pull cable like the following.

1,000 ft bulk Cat5e Ethernet Cable (Wire UTP with Pull Box Cat-5e-Style Grey Cable)

This bulk cable of 1000 ft (308 meters) is by far the cheaper way to buy it. But it might just be too big and too much so I list it last. If you are just starting out I think you could get it as there will always be applications and it will go quicker than you think.

If you look closely at the picture, you can see there is the center hole in the wall of the box, so you can pull through as needed (great for long runs) with the clip to hold the end of the cable until next use.

Used with my TRENDnet Crimp Tool to make new cables or repair damaged ones. Buy a big pack! You will probably use many of these.

(These connectors are also called 8P8C plugs.)

RJ45 Female to Female Straight Coupler

I carry one of these around with me just in case I need to quickly make a longer cable. This one is optional for this exercise, but handy if you cut your long cable and then need to reconnect it!

These do not look the best in my opinion, so you might prefer couplers like these.
Depending on what you’re going to be doing, you might also consider to buy the following tool now, although it is optional for now (did I say it is optional?).

Fluke Network Pro3000 Toner and Probe Kit

I use the Pro3000 for toning and tracing out Ethernet wires. It’s especially handy when the cable installers don’t label any of the ports! If you are going to be installing cables – THEN LABEL THE PORTS please!

And you will probably want other cables in time.

Tools to Connect Your RJ45 Wiring

I mentioned above that there is another article with all the tools to help you make your RJ45 wiring, but I’ll put a few of the most relevant ones below too.

TRENDnet RJ11/RJ45 Crimp/Cut/Strip Tool

I use these for not only making new network cables but also replacing damaged RJ45 connectors on existing cables, using the RJ45 pinout poem shown above of course!

This is my preferred brand of Crimp and Strip tool. If you want you can search around on Amazon to find a brand to your liking (or price for that matter!).

Klein Tools Ratcheting Crimper

A more popular one among colleagues is the Klein Tools crimper.

Brilliant for cutting stripping and crimping.

Ratcheting action makes it easier. Versatile as it crimps 4, 6, and 8 position modular connectors (RJ22, RJ11/RJ12, and RJ45).

Network Cable Tester

This basic network cable tester is used to determine if your cable is good, bad, or wired incorrectly. You will always use this one or one like this.

It has pretty much all the consumables you will need as well as the tools I use and have found to be the best in my work.

A USB flash drive or pendirve is probably the best option for storing or transferring data as it’s the safest way to do it. Using USB drives is particularly recommended when you are physically transporting confidential business and school-related information. Besides being safe, these flash drives are also available in various storage capacities and transfer speeds. If you plan to buy a new USB drive, these two are the primary factors you will need to look for.

However, you can check the tips listed in this article to learn what other important factors you need to consider when choosing a durable and reliable drive. Read on.

Transfer Speed

There are two main types of USB flash drives compatible with all computers, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. The latter is approximately 10 times faster than USB 2.0, which may not be too important if you need to transfer a couple of documents. However, when waiting for a larger data transfer such as media files, speed definitely matters.

If you have a newer version of a laptop or phone, the unit might support USB 3.1 or USB 3.2 ports as well. These are the latest versions in the market, and the type that is up to four times faster than USB 3.0.

Additionally, newer devices can be equipped with micro USB ports, which can also come in handy if your smartphone or tablet supports external memory reading.

As you can see, the USB type you need depends partially on the device you’re transferring data from, more accurately on its USB port. You can find out which port your device uses by opening the device manager and locating the USB options.

Keep in mind that USB 3.0 still works in the USB 2.0, but the writing speed will be that of the USB 2.0 port. In addition, having a USB 2.0 port means you mightn’t be able to use the entire capacity of your drive, which would be a waste of your money and time.

Storage Capacity

USB flash drive capacities typically range from 16 MB up to 4 TB, although you can rarely find anything under 16 GB anymore. Obviously, the amount of storage you need on your drive depends on how much data you want to store or transport.

If you plan to use the USB drive to transfer a few files from your computer, you should opt for one with a smaller capacity. For backing up all of your data files from any device, you will need a USB that can store at least 500 GB.

Before you do anything, check how much space all your files are taking up (see below). The file size you see should be the minimum you will need to count on and also for two reasons: one is because you want to save space for the files you might want to add in the future; and two, as with any other storage space, the actual capacity of a USB drive is smaller than what it’s officially stated.

The reduced storage capacity happens because when your USB flash drive is formatted, some of the storage capacity is allocated for the boot data and file system. You won’t lose too much storage space, but you will still have to count on it.

Design and Customization

Due to their small size, flash drives are always risky to carry around because you can lose them easily. It’s a good idea to use custom USB drives, which you can purchase here, so you can keep track of them.

Get your custom USB drives in a keychain or a bracelet form, and you will never lose them again. If you use USB drives for exchanging data with your clients, buying the drives in bulk in the form of business cards or pens can be a great way to advertise your business.

Security

In addition to getting the flash drives in any shape or size you want, with customization, you can also secure USBs with a built-in keypad for entering a PIN to use the drive. Having a PIN to use the drive is important especially if you are transferring files between multiple computers or are archiving confidential data to ensure the security of the stored files.

Sure, a built-in keypad will add to the cost of USBs, but the security feature will still cost you less than it would if your unprotected drive fell into the wrong hands. Or you can password protect all your files on the USB by using a feature most operating systems and some programs offer.

Using a password is surely a cheaper option, and you can still risk hacking from your computer or releasing malicious software onto it.

Quality of Components

You will probably find a lot of non-branded USB drives for very inexpensive prices. However, these low-priced drives are often made out of cheap materials, which are not as durable as some good quality ones.

Low-priced USB drives can be used only for 10000 writing/erasing cycles, while the ones made by good quality and reputed brands last up to 100000 cycles.

The difference in the writing/erasing cycle number means that opting for better quality products is always safer unless you want to jeopardize all your data.

Warranty

Whether you are purchasing USB devices online or in a physical gadget store, you don’t want to end up with a defective device. Or, in case you do, you’ll need the assurance of the availability of an after-purchase warranty. Ask the seller or the manufacturer directly about the warranty they offer for each product before purchasing any.

Quality products are usually warranted against defects in materials by the manufacturer for up to five years from the date of purchase.

The term depends on the respective product as USBs with larger capacities often have more extended warranty periods. Of course, an extended warranty period elevates the price of the product as well.

If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, get a memory product with a warranty lasting two years. If the drive lasts that much, you can replace the item then with a newer version yourself.

Warranty is an important factor to consider when choosing a new USB drive.

How to check how much space all your files are taking up

To choose the right flash drive you will want to know how much space your files are currently taking up on your PC.

To do this, here are steps that show how to choose the size for your new flash drive.

Step 1: Open File Explorer (windows key + e).

Step 2: Right click Documents on the left hand side.

You might have to scroll down in the left hand window to see the ‘folder’ called Documents.

Step 3: Click at the bottom, Properties.

Step 4: Wait. The amount of time depends on available system resources and the total memory or file size taken by all of your documents, photos etc. It will usually take a while unless your PC is relatively new or you don’t have many files.

The properties of your Documents folder will show the size of all your files, and give you an idea how large to choose your new USB drive.

Step 5: Choose a USB drive with more capacity than you currently need. I’d suggest double, but ultimately it will be a guess as to what your future needs will be. In addition you can choose how much of your current (and future) files you might want to store on a flash drive.

The best of all Microsoft Surface Pro accessories we say is the Microsoft Surface Pro Dock. This accessory is compatible with most Microsoft Pro devices, i.e. the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, Surface Book, Surface Pro, and Surface Laptop.

There is also this Microsoft docking station which is cheaper and is pretty much the same as far as service. The only problem might be whether there are any left (as there was low stock at the time of writing).

The most recent version of the Microsoft Surface Pro docking station is the 1661 here, but that will cost you more.

Greater power capability means support for greater power draw accessories or longer life with more standard accessories.

How to get the most out of it?

Tablet mode is brilliant, but when you get back to the office or home (or the office at home) you will no doubt want to connect to speakers, larger monitor(s) and keyboard. Maybe you can do like me and have a wireless keyboard and mouse pair connect via WiFi and a USB WiFi receiver. Not to mention instant connection to all the other peripherals you probably have.

There are blue tooth and Wi-Fi connections of course. These easily cover you for mouse or keyboard, or both.

I still operate in Surface tablet mode quite a bit when at home, don’t get me wrong. Moving around the home, and Skype-ing from anywhere is cool. (Anywhere? Except maybe the washroom! Maybe that is not so cool…)

However, there is a certain ‘home base’ or ‘HQ’ feel about setting your Surface up as a PC too.

After all, that is what having a 2-in-1 is about. The Surface Pro certainly has the power and capacity for it.

When docked it is easy to have your Surface model hooked up to an external drive for automatic backup via File History. Never lose a file again, and never pay to get lost files back. See how to set up File History here (and how to use it! Opens in a new tab). Please do it as it can really save you!

There is yet another reason why you must have a Surface Pro Dock – instant power and recharge. Need I say more?

All right, I’ll say just a little more.

You can use a portable (smaller) surface charger when on the go. Still, it just seems right to dock and know it takes care of everything at once.

You kind of do get two computers for the price of the dock in addition to the actual Surface tablet 2-in-1. Or is that three in total: tablet, laptop and Desktop PC? Bargain!

You do not have to get a dock I suppose (although I did).

Superseded Docking Station Model for Surface Pro 3:

The following dock is superseded as stated, but some of you might want to find the older style stand-dock within the Surface Pro 3 accessories category.

We loved using this and had to have one when they came out and I still have my Surface Pro 3 docked that way. To reemphasize; it is not for all Surface devices, only the Surface Pro 3.

Here is a link if you like the idea and want to buy the old docking station with in-built stand.

It was a nice design and functions fine.

My only warning based on my experience, is that the back does keep heat in.

It can cause your Surface Pro 3 to run hotter and have reduced performance.

If you run your machine hard for long hours, you might find it can overheat and performance will deteriorate. Secondly you will probably want to set it up higher than your desk, then use a separate keyboard on the desk.

I often used my Surface Pro 3 in a dual keyboard arrangement.

NOTE: Do not buy this stand style docking station for a Surface 3. The two are not compatible!

You could get by very well with the Arc Mouse and Type Cover keyboard. These certainly are two of the best Surface Pro accessories.

I am impressed with the arc mouse after many years of ‘use and abuse’ although I was a little skeptic at first.

I bought one for my wife.

She loves the feel of the scroll feedback mechanism.

It really looks different; the mouse, reinvented.

I believe Microsoft designed it that way so it can snap flat to make it easier to pack to travel (which also turns it off).

I admit her arc mouse has copped some punishment because at night when I walk past I have been known to smack it flat to turn it off (when I notice the cool blue sensing light).

To be fair it is far more robust than I would have originally given it credit. It has never skipped a beat! By this I mean it works well, not that I never missed to smack it flat!

Factoid: you may know the Microsoft Arc Mouse connects to your surface pro via blue-tooth so it doesn’t consume your Surface Pro’s one-and-only built-in USB port.
Smart in many ways this mouse is (read in a Yoda-like voice if you like).
(Sorry, this is a fact, not a factoid!)

The arc mouse therefore is highly recommended.

Now there are several different editions:

This Surface Arc Mouse is cobalt blue, and is the newest version. It also comes in black, burgundy and light gray. You can scroll vertically and horizontally with the “innovative full scroll plane”.

You must have Bluetooth!

This Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse is similar with touch to scroll function (no horizontal scroll built-in). It is cheaper.

So if you want an awesome mouse but save money at the same time, this is the one to get.

Type Cover Accessory

A close second must-have Microsoft Surface Pro Accessory is the Type Cover keyboard.

Although if you don’t want a docking station (and some people don’t ever use one), it becomes the number one must-have Surface accessory.

We originally bought and love the Microsoft Blue (even though it is either cyan or bright blue – that is just what I call it).

This revamped version of the Surface Pro Type Cover has a new improved design with the keys slightly spread out for a feel that is more like traditional laptop.

Lesser-known facts

I have found the Surface Type Cover keyboard is quieter than any other keyboard I have ever used.

The integral mouse pad also is quieter than your standard mouse.

People who don’t have real experience with these keyboard accessories will not be able to tell you that! We do!

Think using it in bed next to my wife sleeping. With the backlight it is just made for that!

In addition the fact it is a back-lit keyboard is awesome and works perfectly.

All these combined can be handy when you need it, like when you are watching – er, I mean – working late at night next to your spouse, or not wanting to wake kids! (Well, maybe that is just me.)

It comes in colors matching the other most recent accessories (use the text link for the cobalt blue, burgundy etc.).

This version the Microsoft Surface Pro Type Cover with fingerprint ID costs only slightly more (currently with a good discount at the time of writing) and it has the larger mouse track pad and the FINGERPRINT ID sensor. Cool!

As we haven’t used this one ourselves it was difficult to put it ahead of the standard new type cover. I imagine if you work late or wake up early and jump straight onto your Surface Pro, then the fingerprint ID is a nice touch to save typing your password. The technology is quite mature now.

Both keyboard accessories are compatible with Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 as well as the more recent Surface Pro (2017) Surface Pro 6, Pro 7 and Surface Pro X.

This one is a more recent version of the Type Cover. More expensive but more recent.

Save money or get the most recent – it’s up to you!

Other Surface Type Covers

We also own the gray (professional looking) and the purple Surface type covers. If you only have the tablet then we strongly recommend you buy the keyboard as your next best accessory.

• It helps protect your tablet screen, first of all. Otherwise you end up buying a cover anyway, right?
• Secondly, there are more convenient functions available direct from the keyboard. For example, you can screen copy easily.
• It has the mouse track pad built-in.

You can initiate a screen copy with the Surface Pen, of course. However, I still find it easier (or more practical) with the type cover. Now, where did I put that Surface Pen…?

One interesting thing you might not know – The French or Spanish Keyboard

I promised to make this an interesting read rather than just a boring list of Microsoft Surface accessories.

Did you know in different countries, the keyboard has different arrangement of keys?

Some are quite similar with only a few characters different here and there, and others are very different.

You probably know the English keyboard as QWERTY. These are the first 6 top left-hand side letters on the keyboard.

However, the French New Surface Pro Keyboard has the first letters as AZERTY.

No need to get a replacement if you can fix it, right?

If you do not have success with that then I suggest you buy a new one, in a new color. We bought a device that allows us to project the surface pro screen direct to our big screen TV. It makes the Surface Pro the perfect device for streaming, projecting and watching movies.

It is a a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter to connect to a screen, using Miracast. There is a USB dongle to insert into your smart TV.

I wanted to put this one into the best accessories section, just because I love it so much. You should have seen my brother-in-law’s eyes!

Shocked and Impressed! (That is my brother-in-law on the right!)

My compromise was to put entertainment directly under the best accessories section.

I find it is very easy to use after the first one or two attempts. Like anything, there is a learning curve yet it is easy for this great accessory. Very easy in fact.

Best External hard drive for Surface Pro

A hardware option for backups is an external SSD ‘hard drive’. A Solid State Drive is smaller than an external HDD and doesn’t need a separate power source. This makes it a better accessory as it is conveniently portable for on-the-go tablet use.

Of course, the microSD is the best Surface Pro accessory for adding memory, due to the tiny size (and miniscule weight). You insert it into the Surface’s microSD slot in the back under the kickstand.

For large backups and mass storage, you must go for an SSD external drive.

Another more point about backups – I recommend the ‘Seagate backup’ model to make it very easy to prepare backups. But I also have bought Western Digital and others.

Final point on the subject: get a HUGE external drive, the most you can afford.

You cannot go wrong if you buy a USB hub as a gift for a Surface Pro owner.

Let’s agree, the best surface accessories for students are often those that are the cheapest.

This would be true for many students anyhow.

Well, you saw my microscope suggestion right at the top of this article! What a great idea to spark an interest in STEM (science technology engineering and mathematics)!

Best Surface Pro Accessory for Students

This suggestion is an important one for students:

• Make sure you have a backpack with a PADDED laptop section.

Why?

Because many students hae the tendency to throw their tablet into their back pack and forget it’s there.

This means it gets thrown around.

At the end of the day, the Microsoft Surface Pro is high tech hardware with tiny components in the computer boards and cables and wiring all soldered in place. In addition, the manufacturer glues together some parts – I assume for tight fit and size miniaturization. This is in line with the trend of increasingly non-customable tech products.

Consider also that the size makes it less robust than a smartphone.

Back to my point: All this means is you do want to minimize jarring and bending! I make this warning with solid knowledge of people searching for fixes when their surface pro won’t turn on, for example. We can fix the most common cause. In the worst case however, some physical misuse can lead to internal components becoming weakened and broken.

I read in a forum a guy said he would have to warm his Surface Pro with a hair dryer for it to start.

This means loose connections inside. Probably from mistreatment.

Nasty!

Avoid these terrible problems and protect the physical integrity of the device.

If you are not likely to be in or near a car all the time, then you will likely want to get one of these.

TIP: In our experience, external batteries are great but after a while they don’t quite achieve what the original claims are (in terms of battery life or recharge capability). So get the most powerful money can buy if you are buying for work.

Other Keyboard accessories for the Surface Pro

I mentioned the surface dock above. You will want a brilliant keyboard to give to better typing performance and ease.

I use a Logitech keyboard and mouse combo.

One thing I like and occasionally find useful is the USB connector WiFi receiver fits inside the mouse so you don’t lose it.

Battery life is really long. Sorry I am not more specific about it, but I have NEVER replaced the batteries.

I’m not sure if it is this exact one, but one like it. You can pay more and get a back-lit keyboard, which is one of the things I love and really find useful about the Surface Type Cover itself.

The best accessories for Microsoft Surface are either one of the protective cases or a protective bag or both (not the screen protector in my opinion, as you will see it has a tough screen).

You be wise to get a soft or hard case in addition to the Surface Type Cover. My wife bought a beautiful purple one that goes nicely with her purple type cover keyboard.

Is a Screen Protector necessary?

I never had a screen protector or case (other than the keyboard).

Instead, I bought a backpack with a laptop/tablet slot. I travel (much less so right now!), and a bag with easy access laptop or tablet slot is essential if you will be traveling through airports like me. The padding all around protects my Surface nicely. I’d say it even helps minimize bending when my bag is crammed full for those long trips away.

Whichever way you chose to go, make sure you think about protection. I do not recommend this lightly.

Note: I have a very popular article that gives fixes to web surfers looking for help with a Surface pro not turning on. It works well, unfortunately I cannot help some unfortunate people whose Surface won’t turn on at all because the internals become loose or disconnected. This might have been due to a lack of protection or lack of care and thoughtfulness.

Tough Screen

The newer 2017 Surface Pro and more recent models has gorilla glass on the screen. That stuff is tough! It is also is on iPhone’s and for sure it takes some beating. (Yes, in this case I mean knocking about.)

However having said that they do claim less finger smudging.

In addition, I suppose my engineering brain can see that a flexible membrane over the hardened glass has potential to stop or reduce risk of brittle fracture under certain circumstances. I have not bought and used one on my Surface Pro, but we list it here because I am serious when it comes to accessories for Microsoft Surface Pro protection.

A screen protector accessory must provide some incremental protection particularly for the Surface Pro 3 or 4. One advantage is they are a low cost option for sure.

A Microsoft Surface Pro is a big investment and a wonderful purchase, so look after it!

Replacement kit

Not sure that you call replacement items that come with Surface accessories or just OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts!

In any case, I suppose the Surface Pro and other Surface models (Book, Surface 3 or Surface 4 etc.) have been around long enough that, new parts exist with improved designs and features. So if you are buying a new Surface Pen or the new keyboard, you kind of are getting Microsoft Surface Pro 4 accessories (or Surface Pro 3 accessories). I hope by now we have covered all of those above for you.

The Best gift for Surface Owners

The best gift is the one that will let them get any Microsoft App or accessory they like.

In my opinion though, the docking station is the most useful gift. If you get one of those you can’t go wrong, if they don’t have one already.

I say this, because of all the accessories out there for the Surface and Surface Pro rage, even if you have one you can always find a good use for another. In this case portability, for example you can leave one and use at home and work. (Especially those who work both in the office and away from home after the Covid-19 pandemic which has drastically increased the number of worker at home.)

I prefer to think this, rather than call it ‘I can’t think of what you like’ gift!

Surface Accessories for Internet connection

How you you connect a Surface to the internet?

Well of course one thing we didn’t cover before here is connecting your Surface to the internet.

So let’s do it now.

If you need a wired connection, you will want an Ethernet cable.

If you do not have a dock which can connect via an Ethernet cable, you will want a USB-Ethernet cable connector accessory for the Surface’s USB connection.

Do understand there is nothing special do to to make it work.

Your Surface pro will connect automatically to the wired Ethernet cable to the internet as soon as you connect it.

It will take precedence over the WiFi connection.

Microsoft Surface Pro Accessory we wish existed

I always wished there was a cable I could use that would connect from the Surface Type Cover to the connector at the base of the Surface Pro tablet.

If anyone EVER hears about something like this, please let me know.

To get around this I have a wireless keyboard and mouse with a wifi receiver that I kepp almost permantly in the one USB on the Surface Pro itself. 

Reason 1

That way I could have the type cover disconnected and in a comfortable location such as on my lap or simply on the table (and elbow-hand height). I would then mount the Surface tablet at a good height for my eyes (top of the screen near to even with eyes).

Thankfully, my eyes are much higher than my elbows in a normal seated position! However, for long periods of working it means either a second monitor or a second keyboard plus docking station. All of which I have!

Reason 2

Such a cable would be a great invention for the lounge room. The tablet could then be over on the coffee table, projecting to the TV, and thus avoid the downpour of popcorn crumbs.

The type cover would be handy nearby. If on my lap, I guess it would just have to cope with the popcorn. Maybe I did not think this one through quite as well as the first reason.

Casey and I are both family men, and now that it is 2020, we have dug deep into what is currently available, to identify which we think is best for gaming – for our kids of course!

Some people have been asking “can I use a cat 7 Ethernet cable for ps4 (or PS3)?” Well, by now you probably understand you can and probably should. But which one should you use and why? Read on to answer this and more.

We explain every consideration for you, and give our picks.

You can rely on our top picks or select the best for you based on our broader information in the details further below. I will help with related accessories and connectors to remember to get at the same time.

Before we get too far into it, here is our pick of the absolute best LAN cable (PS4, Xbox or any gaming device played within your own local area network) and the best of each category.

Which Type is the best Ethernet cable for PS4, Xbox, PC, or Mac gaming?

There are several categories or types of Ethernet cable that have the same end connection (often called RJ45) so you can interchange them.

The cord category IS important. Here’s why.

Category 5

Just don’t bother with Cat5. This standard and design is just too old to consider. Use it if you have some lying around, but do not expect the best performance in local network service. It might be okay if you use it to connect to a slow internet connection. Either way, do not buy any more of this!

Category 5e

This is enhanced Cat5 cable with more stringent performance specifications. These stringent specifications reduce interference to allow error free data transfer at higher rates.

If you need to run your cable along with high electrical noise-inducing cables, then the shielding helps reduce internal cross talk, and can reduce external electrical noise.

This produces very high quality of data transfer, which is what you ideally have for gaming. It allows latency (the time for the ping process of sending and receiving in return a package of data) to be small.

Data Quality affect on gaming

The data package round-trip (ping) time is mostly governed by the internet beyond your home or office. There is distance, traffic and potential quality limits that influence it.

The internal connection from your gaming device to your modem/router will typically make insignificant difference for online gaming. However if it is bad, then it will increase the ping time, i.e. increase latency.

For online gaming of any kind, speed is important! You might find that a tiny split second makes all the difference.

To Wrap each internal twisted wire pair in shielding during the manufacturing process, plus the supply of the necessary additional raw materials makes Cat7 cable more expensive.

Which Spec type do we Choose for PS4 Ethernet Cable?

For PS4 Ethernet cable, we go with Cat6 or Cat7, to take advantage in local area network application (and future upside if used to connect to a modem that might have fast online performance, some day!).

We recognize some people will have a limited budget though.

Whether it is the best in your situation depends on your intended usage. See ‘value versus performance’ below.

The Long and the Short of it – Choosing Length

My advice is to avoid getting much longer than you need. It is true the incremental length does not cost much more.

In the long run, if you will pardon the pun, a much longer length gives more exposure to interference, which can degrade bandwidth performance. So do not overdo it.

I was caught out once before by getting exactly the length I thought I needed. I thought it would be just right.

It ended up always being short by a fraction. This meant one end or the other was always pulling in to a longer radius than I wanted. A minor annoyance but seeing it there reminded me of it repeatedly.

My advice is to work out the length you need and aim to get 50% more. It ensures you have enough without going overboard.

That brings us to look at value for performance.

Value vs performance

You may have hear the saying ‘price is what you pay and value is what you get’.

This saying is definitely something for you to keep in mind when choosing the best Ethernet cable for PS4, PC and other gaming.

I want to make this very clear. If you will be using what you will buy to connect to a moderate to slow internet connection (anything from 100 Mbits/s and slower) then you will probably not get the full value for the price you pay if you buy Cat7 or even Cat6 cable.

If you have slow internet and it will not change in the near future, then go for the best Cat5e cable.

It is typically in local area networks where the high performance of the higher category makes a difference.

I repeat, it is only in local area networks that Cat7 cables perform as the best Ethernet cable for PlayStation 4, Xbox and other computer gaming.

What about uses other than gaming?

Other uses like saving games to and from your own server, transfer of massive quality movie files and so on (ie. high data or bandwidth demands when you are not gaming), also make it worthwhile.

Relatively slow home internet connections that most people have, even with optic fibre to your door, mean that there is no (or negligible) improved performance from having lightning fast Cat7 or even cat6 cables inside from your device to your modem.

I would lean toward buying cat6 Ethernet cable over cat5e for some future-proofing and because you might later use it for more demanding service. If you use it later for gaming in a local area network then you will be pleased you bought a Cat6 cord.

The immense fun you will have will make the small incremental price difference worth it!

In addition, the technical specifications are presented in a way to answer your questions about number and nature of ports. We not only cover the specification of the dock’s ports through to how it performs based on extensive experience with this Microsoft accessory. Read on below!

I guess either you own a Surface Pro 3 or maybe want to buy an accessory for a friend who has one, or you need to update the firmware (which is also pretty easy to do).

Introduction to Updating your Surface Pro Docking Station

You may know more recent models have superseded the Surface Pro 3. That is not bad; it just means you cannot buy them new anymore.

Do not worry though, because you can still buy Surface Pro 3 accessories, including the dock.

Alternatively, you might have a Surface Pro 4 and like the Surface Pro 3 dock enough to use with it, or already have one.

You might own a Surface Pro 3 and want to get the docking station for it. This article will help you buy the right one.

Note: You can consider two Microsoft branded options:

1. The Surface Pro 3 Docking Station, which was released the same time as the Surface Pro 3.
   YES! You CAN still buy them.
   
2. The New Surface Pro docking station, which does not have the stand. It has other excellent features and is the upgraded version.

Thankfully Microsoft have made the newer dock compatible with the Surface Pro 3 and the Surface Pro 4.

Speaking of compatibility, you might want to connect ‘the other way’. By this I mean you can connect a Surface Pro 4 to a Surface Pro 3 docking station, almost.

That is, you can connect a Surface Pro 4 to the older style dock (i.e. with the frame) provided you have an adapter. More on this below.

You can then take advantage of all the ports to connect your Surface Pro to your peripherals.

Now, as I said above, some people are searching to update their Dock firmware (can solve certain docking station issues, like not supplying power or your Surface Pro not charging).

Here’s the Surface Pro docking station update step-by-step:

Update Surface Pro Docking Station Firmware

Updating the firmware for an existing dock may help solve a number of previously identified problems.

Note this will only work and update Microsoft Surface Dock models. If you have another dock (see further below for non-Microsoft brands) then this won’t work for you. Try the manufacturer of that device.

The Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 docking station update work exactly the same. The Microsoft Surface Dock Updater support also works with Surface 5 and 6.

Step 1 Check for Windows updates

Normally this is automatic these days, but if you need to manually update an older version of Windows see here, or if  you have Windows 10 that hasn’t updated, see this article on how to do it.

Step 2 First navigate to the updater software

Use the link further below to get the MS Surface Pro Dock updating software (firmware to be precise).

Step 3 Download the firmware updater

Just click the link in the Microsoft page at the link above.

Step 4 Install the downloaded Surface Pro Dock Updater.

Yep, you guessed it, just install it (click to install).

Step 5 Start the Updater

When you click start, the first thing it does is check your current version of firmware.

If it says something like “You have the latest firmware fr this surface dock.” You’re in luck. Or then again, you may be trying to solve a problem, and this is not the cause, so that isn’t so good.

The second of the two likely comments can be “This Surface Dock is not running the latest firmware”.

Step 6 Update the Firmware for you Surface Dock

Click ‘Update’.

This will take a moment and shows you a progress bar so you know that the dock update is actually happening.

Please do not disconnect the Surface Dock during this time, or you could turn it into a nice, non-function stand (if Surface Pro 3) or a rather silly paper weight (for the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pro 2017 or more recent version).

Step 7 Reset the MS Dock Chipset

To actually update the Surface Dock chipset with the new firmware you have to disconnect the dock.

NOTE: Maintain power supply to the dock during this time.

After a moment you will then be prompted to reconnect the Surface Dock.

Step 8 Also update Display Port

This will happen once you again disconnect the Surface Pro dock.

Again, a progress bar is shown and this will typically take up to three minutes.

Surface Dock updater stuck or other problem

Finally, there is an event log to let you discover the nature of any failure to work through the Surface Dock update.

So you will find that works for some of you. If it doesn’t, I’m afraid you may be better off to buy a replacement (see the links above and below for recommended options and their features).

Okay, now back onto getting a replacement dock and the supporting information to select which dock to buy.

Specifications – Surface Pro 3 Docking Station Ports:

• 2x USB 3.0 ports.
• 2x USB 2.0 ports.
• 1x MiniDisplay Port.
• Audio out jack port.
• Ethernet cable Port. (Suitable with Cat5 and Cat5e RJ45 Ethernet cable connection to your router.)

In addition, of course in contains the side pin connector, which plugs into the side of your Surface Pro 3 when you push together the sides of the dock.

I think the Stand arrangement of this dock is effective and provides a very solid stand.

Surface Pro 3 Dock issues

Based on my experiences. As you may know, it does enclose the lower back half of your Surface.

This means that when you go to insert it into the (older) dock you must close the back first. Not necessarily a deal breaker! It has been a little fiddly at times, and means it is never a one-handed exercise.

You may understand that the back of the stand also provides more material around the back of the Surface Pro 3, particularly compared to when the kickstand is open.

Thus, you might find it operates a little warmer than when you do not have it docked.

This has been an issue for me when I wanted to use the device to its maximum performance. (See the overheating troubleshooting section below.)

The other thing with the Surface Pro 3 docking station back is that it prevents you from having the kickstand of the Surface Pro open.

Note: This means you cannot insert remove or change the micro SD card in the back. This is because the Surface Pro 3 micro SD card slot is at the back under the kickstand.

If you don’t intend to use a microSD card, or you won’t insert or remove it from the slot very often, then this is not a deal breaker.

TIP: Rather than straining your neck to see if the power is turned on and reaching your device, you can hold your finger just above the right hand side of the dock and look for the LED light reflected off your skin.

Specifications – New Surface Dock

There are a few upgraded ports or additional ports. Let’s take a look.

The New Surface Pro docking station ports:

• 4x USB 3.0 ports.
• 2x Mini Display Ports.
• 1x Audio out port.
• 1x Gigabit Ethernet Port.

Instead of a frame and stand there is only the magnetic Surface connector plug at the end of a lightweight cable, which connects your surface Pro just like the charger cable. The remainder of the ports are installed in the larger bodied Surface charger-like box.

New Surface Dock Issues

Naturally if you get this dock, you need to use the stand of your Surface Pro 3 to prop it up.

There is no back stand unlike the Surface Pro 3 Dock, so there will not be any overheating issues due to that.

Your Surface Pro should have already come with a charger, which in all cases have an additional USB connection. The New Surface Dock is somewhat like another charger, but larger with all the additional ports. So you now have a little more information to compare the two types of Surface dock before you select the one you want to buy.

Connect Surface Pro 4 to Surface Pro 3 Dock

You might require this if you already have a Surface Pro 3 dock (i.e. the frame stand). As I wrote above, you need an adapter. Wait! Before you groan, the adapter is free.

This way, you can dock to instantly connect your Surface Pro 4 to your monitor, network via cable, speakers, whatever keyboard you may have, plus printer if you have one etc.

Surface Pro 4 has three docking station options: There are (practically) free, if not difficult for some to get.

These are the docking station adapter options:

1. You can ask for a dock adapter at your nearest Microsoft Store, (‘Surface Pro 4 adapter for Surface Pro 3 docking station‘).
2. If not, you can go to Device service and repair and select ‘Replace an accessory’ to order one.
3. Also, to get one quick you might be able to make one! (See below.)

Yes Microsoft have a downloadable set of instructions to 3D print your own. Wow! Talk about outsourcing!

If you have a 3D printer you can download it (surface pro 4 adapter for surface pro 3 docking station) here. No waiting nor going to the shops! Nice. Be sure to use the above procedure to perform a Surface Pro docking station update.

The adapter sits on top of the dock so that the Pro 4’s connections are at the correct height and depth position.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you could wedge something in there. This might only be good enough to be a temporary measure. You don’t want to damage the connectors.

NOTE: Not all the Surface Pro models can connect to all docks.

As far as I can see, all the ports are relatively close together on the back of this dock, so you might not be able to connect all your peripheral accessories at once depending on their shape.

Surface Pro 3 docking station vs Surface 3 dock

Here is the Surface 3 dock.

Note: It is important to get the correct docking station. I would like to clarify the difference between the Surface Pro 3 Dock as opposed to the Surface 3 Dock.

This is important because if you get the wrong one, the side connector arrangement is different (there are two) and does not line up to the correct Surface Pro 3 port.

This Surface 3 docking station is not compatible with the Surface PRO 3. Only click if you have a Surface 3. IF you do need this model you can get a big discount!

It will not be compatible due to the changed connections on the Surface Pro 3 relative to the Surface 3. Hence, you do not want to get the wrong one.

Troubleshooting Overheating issues

I already mentioned overheating. If that is your issue, read on.

Note: If your Surface 3 is slowing down significantly, it might be caused by overheating.

Other known problems are failing to exit flight mode to connect to Wi-Fi. We have another article on how to fix windows stuck in airplane mode here.

The first action to take is to review what you have running.

Sure, having 30 applications open and running can consume a lot of power and that power consumption generates more heat.

However, some things can use up power when you are not expecting it. To check performance, go to the task manager.

Task manager access:

• One way to access task manager is to press the following three keys at once: <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Del>. Obviously this requires a keyboard!
• In tablet mode you can swipe down from the top right hand side of the screen in Windows 8.1.
• In Windows 10 you can tap and type in the search bar or tap on the microphone next to the search bar, and search for task manager. Cortana will open it for you.
• In task manager you can see what is consuming CPU and memory, among other things.

In Windows 10 tap or click bottom left to show more or fewer details.

Next steps

To troubleshoot you need more details. Look at CPU column and Memory column in turn.

Sort from maximum to minimum by clicking at the top of the table.

Look at the biggest CPU power consumers and memory users of the top few item at the top left hand side of the task manager. Check and confirm if you are really using those apps a significant amount.

Don’t worry too much about things you don’t recognize.

Often the issue will be something like your internet browser is stuck in some loop and you need to close some or all of the tabs. You might even need to restart. Make sure you save all your work first!

Other Options

Unfortunately the dock was not designed with an additional cooling fan system or something like that, not even as an additional accessory. Now that would have been cool!

The only other options are un-dock Surface Pro 3 (or 4) and possibly cool with your own separate fan.
